Heck, I don't know what the previous owner did. Probably nothing, by the looks of the bike when I bought it. It may not even have oil in the forks. I'll investigate that on Friday, time permitting. I just bought it a few days ago....the price was so dang good. Beyond the clunking noise, all else is great. An 02 with 11k miles for $4900, I thought was a deal.

You need to have the forks serviced and inspected by an Indy including springs, oils, seals. 16 years is a long time.

I agree. But, I hate paying anyone to do something I know I can teach myself to do. I figured, if that Harley shop mechanic with a 12th grade education can do this, I should be able to do it too.

That's the attitude

It's a very simple system...(but do some preliminary research on disassembly)

Have a Service Manual?

You have confidence in your wrenching abilities? (not neccesarily you're knowledge)

If so, Tear it down

.

I'll be fine. A neighbor of mine can help if needed.....He's done everything a man can do to his Springer and Ultra.

Ok....we don't need to know what happens behind closed garage doors

Post-up pics during the process

While sitting on the bike, hold the front brake and slowly push forward. Have someone else watch the bushings holding the rotor. They could have some play in them. Assuming yours has this rotor.
This is what caused the clunk in mine.
