OK guys an update on my whirling noise problem. After hearing from the service manager at the dealership that it was normal I decided to take off the derby cover and use a long screw driver and flash light to check the tension on the primary chain. To me it was too tight. I ordered a Hayden from Amazon and got it in two days. I drained the primary oil, Formula + , and took off the primary cover. The primary chain was so tight that it had no slack what so ever. I looked at the HD auto tensioner and saw that a bushing was laying under it. That bushing was suppose to be on the bolt that held the tensioner, there are one on each bolt that go between the tensioner and the back of the primary case. The other bushing was not there, I only found one, laying on the bottom of the primary case. I will never have that dealership work on my bike again. Since I installed the Hayden tensioner, all whirling noise is gone and my primary chain is happy again since it has some slack. Thanks to all the posts for the help.
That is disappointing that the spacer/bushing was not installed ,, and to make matters worse, the spacer was left in the primary compartment. (FYI, the newer Harley auto primary tensioners do not have the spacer/bushings anymore)
That being said,,, I wonder if you had removed and reinstalled the primary tensioner with the spacer/bushings in their correct positions ,, would that have solved the whirling noise you experienced ????
I suppose we will never know, as you are happy with the aftermarket Hayden tensioner Cheers ...
I like the fact that you do not have to adjust the Hayden. No removing the primary or having to purchase an expensive cover to use the Baker. Otherwise I would get it. I have not had an issue with the Hayden. With my racing exhaust I doubt I could hear the difference but it shifts smooth and doesn't need to adjusted.
This is why I do all my own work. Last time a dealership had my bike just for a rear tire, somehow my sprocket bolts were all loose and made contact with my swingarm shearing off. Luckily I caught it early and they came and picked it up. After 3 weeks, a new rear wheel, new swingarm and a bunch of phone calls I got it handled. Now when I need a tire, they get the wheel only.
