My compensator went out on my 2007FXDWG. Had the stearlership put in the SE comp. The bike now has this whirling noise at idle and while going down the road. It increases with rpms. Took it back to them and of course they told me it was normal with the SE comp. Is it?
I did my SE comp early, no noises. If you are doing yours with more than a few miles on, it could because your chain and flywheel have all worn together... now comes a new sprocket... I suspect you'll see a bit more metallic content when you drain your primary oil. Not drastic... just more... until your comp and chain come to an understanding
Or... get a new chain and flywheel now.
I suppose I should ask, 'how many miles on the bike' ?
The bike has over 39,450 miles on it. Before the new comp, no whirling noise, now there is. I use formula + in the primary and the tech told me in would quite down after a while, so we will see. When I start the bike it is not there but within seconds it is. I may add a little more oil and see if that helps. Thanks for the help.
I had the whirlybird noise with my 2012 wg, my problem was the stock auto chain tensioner. I took it out, got it to unrathchet to loosen up. All was good for a couple hundred miles and it tightened back up. The whirlybird was back, sillent at startup but whirlybirding after it was hot. I did the baker attitude adjuster and i figured why not do the baker compensator while I was at it. After the install I still had some whirlybird noise but not as bad. After a couple thousand miles even less. I think like your tech said, the chain has memory. I did all this under 10 k for mileage. You had more miles on your set up so see if it gets better if not new chain maybe. All so are you looking for noises that are not as bad as they are registering. Hey when ever I do something to my bike I tend to over analyze as far as looking for noises. Good luck!
OK guys an update on my whirling noise problem. After hearing from the service manager at the dealership that it was normal I decided to take off the derby cover and use a long screw driver and flash light to check the tension on the primary chain. To me it was too tight. I ordered a Hayden from Amazon and got it in two days. I drained the primary oil, Formula + , and took off the primary cover. The primary chain was so tight that it had no slack what so ever. I looked at the HD auto tensioner and saw that a bushing was laying under it. That bushing was suppose to be on the bolt that held the tensioner, there are one on each bolt that go between the tensioner and the back of the primary case. The other bushing was not there, I only found one, laying on the bottom of the primary case. I will never have that dealership work on my bike again. Since I installed the Hayden tensioner, all whirling noise is gone and my primary chain is happy again since it has some slack. Thanks to all the posts for the help.
