Default Stupid Newbie Question (ECM)

I'm looking around for a good aftermarket ECM and need some basic pointers on where to start.

Do any of the aftermarket units replace the existing ECU physically? Which ones? SERT? What else??

I know the DJ USB and the Terminal Velocity II don't replace the ECU but what should I do before I install either? Do I need to go to my dealer to have him program the stock ECU to work with my new components before adding them? I've seen reference to having a "Stage 1 download" prior to getting the DJ, does this involve getting the SERT first? Is there some reason you can't use the stock ECU just as well?

Is it possible to reprogram the stock ECU myself or is that a dealer only thing?

I know most everyone here is happy with the aftermarket ECU they have now but really, what are the real differences? Is it just a matter of service or do they really perform that much differently?

Lots of options and cost out there...some simply augment the existing ECM by adding or removing fuel to the existing mix...others like the Thundermax effectively replace it alltogether..... Other things to consider are the O2 Sensors....some take them out of the loop and make an open loop system...thus "dumbing up" the ECM....that said I have heard and read that you can use even units like the PCIII with the closed loop system...

Really, I think that it will come down to what you want to spend and what you want to get out of it... I have both the SERT and PCIII...once I tuned each in (individually) they both work about the same, IMHO, .... you will find fans of all of them....I suggest determining what your deciding factors are...evaluating the deltas...and executing :-P

Done tried the sert, buddy has a terminal velosity, another buddy has a power commander. Before you waste yer money playing around. save it up and buy a Thundermax with Auto Tune. It will be the best choice you could make. Yer bike will run better and you don't need dyno time. I got a indy shop at home that installed mine for me. Bike runs better than with the sert too. And when you make changes with the sert, its more money for dyno time. Not with the sert.

Another vote for Thundermax. I did my homework and found it to be worth the extra money. You will save money from dyno tunes and the like. The bike starts the mili-second the starter button is touched, idles smooth, power deleivery is GREAT and just all-around runs better. I, along with many others arevery happy with it.

Thanks, this is the sort of comparison I was looking for.

With so many options out there it's really hard to pick without talking to people with experience.

Thanks Jman, already knew which camp you were in.

BTW, your bike sounds great! Can't wait to get everything done to mine, that stock sound just doesn't do it for me. [:'(]

That was actually a really damn great question. I have the PCIIIUSB and I'm not really all that happy with it. The bike is hard starting and I still get some pop on decel. I've NOT dynoed the bike yet... but before I drop cash on doing that, I'm going to have a look at the thundermax...
