I have a 01 FXD Ive owned since brand new. Ive done A LOT of work on it over the years but Ive always had drag bars on it. Now at 50 years old my lower back cant take it. Ha. Want to switch to apes or 12 mini apes. Looking for suggestion. Also, will I need to change all my cables? Brake lines? Throttle? Control switch cables etc?
Get the mini apes from a 2008 Street Bob (#56079-93) $79 fro HD. You will have to change the throttle cables and the brake line, but not the clutch. (routes inside bars)
The elec wires will stretch far enough. (mine did) Your's may differ slightly.
I did this on my 08 FXD and it straightened my back right out.

I've ridden with drag bars since the mid '80's. The grip angle of drag bars has always been the most comfortable for me. As I've gotten older (hit 60 next month) I've just gone with taller and taller risers. 12" now. Just another option for you.
I have lower back issue also and needed higher bars. For something else to look at, on my 2005 FXD I have "Flanders Super Glide Style" bars. I needed +4" cables. Wasn't sure I liked them at first... but like them now. I would get them again if I had a reason to.

I like your setup I know what you mean about the comfort factor to elevating drag bars! but like yours I really prefer the look off tall risers better than the one piece T bars 10 1/2" pullback risers
The tough part for the older FXDs like my 01 is the speedometer. Tough to relocate it. I changed mine to a smaller digital unit but its still on the bar clamp.
