Sure, without the voltage being regulated from the alternator delivering its maximum voltage, not only could the fuel pump be fried, but other electrical components as well (headlights, turn signals, radio, speedometer, etc.). These items aren`t designed to take much more than 14 volts applied steadily, and the higher the voltage the shorter time it would take to cause them to fail. The stator of the alternator in a modern HD motorcycle can produce as much as 54 volts at 3000 rpm, so it`s obvious why a means to regulate the output voltage is needed.....
