If youre looking to clean the motor, give Castrol SuperClean a try, it is an amazing degreaser. That and a good medium and soft bristle scrub brush will take a lot of the crap off the silver. Personally, Ive never seen anyone powder coat a Harley motor from silver to black and have it look right, just my opinion though.
Thanks, I'll have to give that stuff a try, never used it before.
The problem I'm facing is that somewhere along the line, someone tried polishing the aluminum and now it looks super corroded. Fork tubes, wheels, and engine. So it definitely has to get coated with something. As I said earlier, I don't like powder coating for its aesthetics, so I would probably go for a paint on the engine instead.
Look into getting the tank repaired right away. They are quite a pain to replace as the 04-05 tanks are specific for those years only and can be a pain to find. I know I own the exact same bike a year older 04. Ended up buying a tank I found at a buds shop as a spare because of this reason.

I believe that the tank is beyond repair; I will be attempting to find a new tank to replace it with. I did not realize that the 04-05 tanks are not interchangeable, that narrow the pool.
Figured I'd give a little cost update. I'm pretty bad with holding on to receipts, so I'd better get on it or I will lose them. I will be tracking every dollar spent to complete the project; parts, labor, tools, etc.

One thing that I totally missed on the pre-purchase inspection was this little gem right here...
When the bike crashed, it broke the stop off of the triple tree. Then the handlebars swung over and put a giant dent in the tank. I have a friend who operates a machine shop, and he's actually messed around with milling a few of these before, but it's pretty time consuming. I'm also considering welding a stop tab back on, because a new replacement is very expensive, and I have as yet been unable to put my eyes on a used replacement for sale.

Not sure what your definition of very expensive is, but $150 in my book isnt too bad.
Not sure where you are looking for parts, but I use Ronnies to find parts numbers for OEM parts, then just search from there. V-Twin Manufacturing is a good source for reproduction replacement stuff.
