Just picked up a 17 FXDL and while reading to learn about it came across threads on motor mounts. Went out to check mine and the rubber is actually a little compressed by the engine.
Never set up correctly or worn mount that needs replaced?
If the mount got coated in oil every time the oil filter was changed, the rubber would start to deteriorate faster than it would have otherwise. Seems plausible that four years worth of that could affect the rubber to the point of showing wear. A 2017 would be purchased new in 2016, right?
It's pretty hard to change that filter without making a mess. It looks really simple to just shove some cardboard or whatever under there to catch it, but in reality some always gets in behind of whatever funnel I've tried to make. I got one of the flexible funnels linked below recently but haven't used it. It feels like they combined cheap chinese garbage from two different 80s products into some new product that I fell for. I think this might be a knock-off that I accidentally bought, cause the real one is expensive. This one feels like they put semi-crinkly material inside of the plastic that they made binders out of in the 80s. Hopefully it works but I have my doubts.
I was expecting something silicone-based but I guess I wasn't paying attention when I saw the cheaper one. It's truly hilarious how **** this thing is:
The front motor mount on my 17 FXDB was trash at 10k miles and was replaced with a predator mount, one my rear wheel bearings also took a **** at 8k miles, i had spokes showing rust within 6 months and several other things. Poor quality on this bike no longer surprises me.
