Default Follow up on blown motor mount

My front motor mount had gotten really torn up after 6200 miles. I posted it about a week ago and got some very good responses and advice. Now it's fixed.
It ended up we had to shim the front mount 1/16", that took care of the loud clanking. "We" means my indy (he works on it and I pay). I took it to him mainly because I had no good way to hold the bike upright while jacking the motor.
He rode the bike after the install and heard another clank, not as loud. Back on the lift he eventually saw that the rear mount was loose. Fixed that, too.
So it seems like the rear mounts can be issues also, even with low miles.
Wanted to give my thanks for all the good info from several of you guys.
Especially dyna rider, who had a spare mount that he sent me for no more than the postage. People like him are what makes this a great forum.

Yeah, this really is an awesome forum with really good people. I'm happy to be a part of this place.

Sucks about the motor mount being blown with such low mileage. Glad you got it fixed though! I replaced mine a couple/few thousand miles ago as well. I believe it was around 22k miles that I replaced it.

From what I've read (and experienced), it seems like checking the tolerances on the mount should be done early on with these Dynas. Might save some problems and money down the road. Not as simple as checking drive belt tension, but worth it to make sure it's correct.
My bike feels much more solid than it was before it failed, so I think it was never installed properly at the factory and wasn't doing the job.

do your best to protect the new mount from oil when your remove your filter during oil changes. I think getting oil on the mount can severly effect the longevity of the rubber.

Here's some info from another thread on the oil & motor mount issue:

The bottom line is not to spill oil on the rubber engine mounting block.

Follow this link and find the instructions & pictures: http://www.ernstmfg.com/Images/pdfs/...ctions_web.pdf

This kind of "funnel" can be made easily out of a plastic soda pop bottle

I will post a couple of links below that will help. You should also run a search here for motor mounts.
Basically you have to have the bike upright and use something like a scissor jack under the motor to take the weight of the motor off the frame. You can then loosen the motor mount bolts and see if there is a gap between the frame and the mount. I don't know what the gap should be, but I don't think that it can hurt to shim anything more than 1/32".
Whether you end up shimming or not, you can align the mount before you torque it down by running the motor for 5 seconds. This is described in the shop manual.

There is a link in this last one to another forum with an excellent write up about this. Hope this helps.
