Okay I am new to the world of HD, I thought that everyone shared a common love for motorcycling in general and had some brand loyalty, however I have noted that they are indeed cliques. Take for example the baggers, they like other baggers. I have notedon my morning commuteon the whidbey island to Mukilteo ferry that the baggers - preferother baggers,But when it comes to my Dyna they trat it like it may as wellbe a Suzuki. One dude on a Heritage soft-tail even asked me if my 07 FXDC Dyna was a sporster! I humbly replied no - it's a big twin 96 cu in, Dyna Super Glide Custom. All I got was oh.... you would think he would know by the size of the engine alone! although Dyna's do at a glance resemble a sporty to some degree, however it is a much bigger bike, and shares little to nothingwith asportster. Oh well let em be - live and let live and I will just enjoy my Dyna, I say to myself.
I think the guy was probably just a d!ck and really doesn't have anything to do with what type of bike he had.... prolly true for the whole crowd you are encountering.
I see a lot of baggers ride together up here in the PNW as well... but I think thats just because there are a lot of baggers, not because they are snobs that won't ride with other types of bikes.
Next time you get asked by a Harley owner if your bike is a Sporty, so "no, is yours a Honda"? (or Victory)... combined with a little indignant laugh of course (I agree, engine design alone is a dead giveaway and any Harley owner should know the difference between model lines. I don't know many of the specific models from each other, but I know a Softy or Dyna when I see it... likewise for the Sporty)
I of the same school of thought as my old man, who taught me at a very youg age. A Harley is a Harley, and I never seen one I did not like. From Sporty To Bagger. They are all cool.
I have always been open to all bike types, we are all a brotherhood, all types of HD's and any other type of bike. We need to look out for each other, cause no one else will.
The baggers hang together because most of us are old farts....aka Geezers..., that' why we have them.
It's not your father's Oldsmobile........................ We hang together to compare seat comfort and our medications! (just kidding)
There comes a time in life when you want more cush for your tush, room for the significant others er...stuff and like to listen to a few tunes. Couldn't afford a bagger in the FXSTC days and they didn't really appeal then but the older I got, the better they looked.
As for someone putting your ride down -This whole thing is about personal freedom so I don't care what you ride if you ride safe around me. And like the commercial I saw about the nagging wife, the guy just rolled on the throttle as he left and said to himself, "one more mile and I won't remember a thing"!
Meh... I'm not going to get bent out of shape over someone not being an expect on telling one bike model from another. I can tell a Dyna from a Sportsterbut I don't expectsomeone who owns a bagger or softail tonecessarily know whatsets the two apart. Not everyone who has a Harley of any given model is going to be interested enough in the other models to learn all the styling cues to tell them apart.
Now when someone asks if my Street Bob is a Night Train....
I wouldn't mind a bagger someday, hell if I could afford two I'ld have one as my second bike now.
I also get asked if I have a sportster or "Why didn't you get a big Harley?" Most people that ask things like this don't know what they are talking about. Either they aren't bikers or they are what I refer to as Super Bikers (the guys that haven't been riding more than a couple years but know everything there is to know about the world of motorcycles, usually spotted by every piece clothing they wearmatches their bike, be it all HD or all Honda orYamaha, etc. and lack of any real knowledge.)
JUST RIDE & SMILE!
I could see from the back they can resemble each-other
but you can tell when you get up beside um. Just smile.
He probably has a small pecker and gets his kicks trying
to ruffle feathers. LOL!
