Wire Going into the Cam Cover for a 2000 FXD
Thanks,
MAJOR
Just returned from trip to California and back, Yep, 3800 miles on the 2000 FXD DYNA SUPPER GLIDE. During the trip I was losing oil through the wire connection going into the Cam Cover. I mentioned this to HD Tech at Parts Counter and he could not identify what the purpose of the wire is. HD Diagram does not show this wire in the HD Manual. Just wondering if anyone knows what the purpose of the wire is for before I dive in and start taking things apart. Thanks
Add.. BTW are you sure it's not leaking from the oil sending switch and blowing back?

I think Max may have nailed it. Check blow back from the oil sending switch.
I was blowing oil out of the Cam Cover where a wire (See picture) goes in. On the whole, it took a full quart during the trip. The wire is hooked up through the wiring harness, so I know it has a purpose.
The Tech at my local HD Dealership did not know what the wire's purpose is. He checked the HD Manual for the 2000 FXD and was stumped. Before I start the tear down process, does anyone know what the purpose of the wire is for? You can clearly see the Cam Sensor that goes into the Cam Case. The wire is to the left.
Thanks,
MAJOR
It's for the cam sensor. Only 99 and 2000 dynas had it.. If it's leaking out of there, it's either a casting flaw or possibly the cam sensor is leaking. You might see a leak from under the smaller cover on the cam cover. Pull that one off and have a look..

OP..... been awhile since I've seen an early Twin Cam engine with the cam sensor wire.....
But I believe MAX and eighteight have shown you what you are dealing with. You should be able to verify it by just taking off the timing cover (small cover on the cam chest cover).
In your pic there are two wires. One to the left that is coming out the cam chest cover and one to the right that is coming out the cam chest case....
You say in your post, "You can clearly see the Cam Sensor that goes into the Cam Case. The wire is to the left."
I believe you have confused the cam sensor wire with the oil pressure switch & wire, and the wire to the left is actually the cam sensor wire as MAX said.....
In the parts diagram pic that eighteight posted for you, it doesn't show the routing of the cam sensor wire, but the oil pressure switch is clearly visible in the far right of the posted pic. The full parts diagram shows that the oil pressure sender screws into the cam chest case and has a wire with a right angle connector on the end. This matches your actual photo, and the wire that is on the right of your photo.
I think it will become obvious as soon as you remove the cam chest cover or smaller timing cover on the cam chest..
Good luck with the tear down...

By using an ignition module from a 2001 - 2003 TC, or a aftermarket module like Dynatek or DTT, the cam sensor can be removed. 2004 and up have a different module.
This is for carbed bikes, I have no idea what applies to efi.
