Default How do I remove this cam cover??

HI folks.....I do have an original 2000 Harley Dyna Service Manual. It doesnt touch on this......
Its been awhile since Ive been here. Didnt have a bike for awhile. Anyways, I picked up a 2000 FXDX that Im partially dissembling and repainting/refurbishing.

I need to remove the cam cover/nose cone. Simple.....just remove the bolts. It has a wire with a pickup coil that runs through the housing which I suspect is for the tachometer.
The wire comes out the housing but disappears under the bike into the main loomed harness. I would have expected a plug that I could unplug and remove as an assembly?? Has anyone encountered this? Do I really have to cut the harness then re-solder together?

As far as I can tell this is 99-00 models only?

Thanks for the help!

the wire from the cam cover is for the cam sensor … follow and you should find a connector you can unplug … you should not need to cut the wires

Unfortunately, this is a little but of a pain... On my 2000 FXDX, that wire (cam sensor) enters a sheath on the side of the engine case, which is shared with the wire from the crank sensor, under the right side of the oil filter. These wires continue unbroken in the sheath to the underseat area, where they leave the sheath and have their own pair of connectors. I never undid mine when working in the cam chest, I just supported the whole cover off to the side.

Great thanks. Ill have a look. I wonder if I can pull that pair out of the sheath separate to the oil pressure and crank sensor wires. But yes.....this routes the same way as you explained. Reason for removal is that I would like to blast and paint this cover black. (currently chrome and has been painted once)

Remove the seat and remove the pins from the connection plug. Tie a piece of heavy string to the pins and carefully pull the wires out of the loom at the cover. This should leave the string in the loom to reinstall the wires after powdercoat/paint. Make sure there are no tie wraps securing the loom so the wires will not get caught.
