Easy with that axe Eugene! Drilling holes is last resort stuff, you ain't anywhere near there yet, I like Unc B's idea of boiling water, try that first and more than once, boiling hot water just might do the trick! Wear some think gloves, bars are gonna be piping hot!

Get some thick fishing line and tie a small fishing hook on the end. See if you can feed it in to grab a piece of the casing with the hook and pull it out. Use different sized hooks until you find one that's small enough to grab it. A higher test weight line (thicker) may help you feed it in better.

It could be shrink tubing that was not fully shrunk. The hot water idea may shirk it, or maybe just using a heat gun blowing in from the grip end may shrink it enough to make it lose. Then hook it as mentioned.

One other thing that might work. If you have one of those flexible pick up tools that you push the plunger on the end and it opens some fingers. Might just be able to get a good grip on it.

Good luck!
Tom

Does the plastic dissolve in acetone? Or, burn it out...

Hello,
Thanks to all for the excellent suggestions!

I ordered one of the spring operated grabbers on Amazon and I'll attempt to remove more of the casings as time permits. I've decided that, no, I won't ever scrap the bars since they are so expensive new but I also want to give a good deal to another rider once they are cleaned out.

As mentioned above, I managed to remove a section from one side of the bars and that gave me some hope! I've learned from this problem that we should not use hard casings when installing wires in ape bars. It would be OK to use soft black nylon casings that would pull right out when removing wires. Maybe best of all would be to install the wires without casings since the chance of a short circuit is minimal due to the fact that the wires don't move once installed.

Here are pictures of my present job. I found a set of stock 2010 Dyna bars on eBay. I used 3/8" black nylon casings and they went right in since the bars are almost flat and they are 1-1/4" anyway. I've also used the Carlini El Presidente risers that were on the Apes when I got the bike a year ago. These bars will go on this weekend and then I'll be back riding again! I'll continue to work on the Evil Apes until they are clean and then they will be sold.
