I checked the oil hot, after about an hour ride. The dipstick has "X" marks to kinda hold the oil.

Jiffy stand the level was 1/2 "X" down from full mark. Bike on lift and level. Level was a hair above the full line. Kinda what I expected. Though I wouldn't mind a little lower

When the engine is stone cold tomorrow, I put a mark on it for cold full when on the lift. Probably about 1/2 an "X" lower than what it shows cold when I check it. Then next oil change I'll write in the book how much to put in.

Thanks for the help!!
Tom

Myself, I just check it cold before a ride, and never worried about it when it is on a lift and level. If are adding oil when on the lift, you know how much you added. So I am mildy curious the difference. I was surpised it makes 1/2 quart difference.

I do check when hot too. But either I way I run mine about 1/2 quart low, give or take a little.

When it's stone cold tomorrow, I let you know where it's at with the bike on my lift and level. IIRR the add to full marks are 1 quart. When I checked it this morning stone cold on my lift and level as well as leaned over on the jiffy stand, IIRR it was "about" 1/2 way between the add and full mark, maybe a little less.

On my Guzzies, there is almost no difference between hot and cold level on the dipstick. At least not enough to easily see, maybe just below the full line when cold and just a hair above when hot. The add to full on them is one liter. Level or on the HD/police style stand does make a difference of about 1/3 liter when hot or cold. The bike leans to the side with the dipstick.

Well that was interesting and not what I expected.....

Checked the oil level in the afternoon yesterday. Stone cold on my lift and level. The level was at full hot on jiffy stand??????

I didn't have much time to play with this yesterday. But I thought what would happen if I start the bike for 20 seconds or so? Well the level came down. Started it up again a few minutes latter, ran it for about 30 seconds or so and the level was down even more. Still not at about half like it was stone cold the day before, that is where I expected it to be when I did the first check.

So I feel I have learned nothing except that checked hot will give a good reading. Yeah right....I'm going to change my oil and go for an hour ride or so. Then check it hot to see if it's properly full and adjust as needed.

Guess I'm used to just putting in the correct amount and let it sit until I'm ready to ride it. Or even leave for a long trip right after the change. Guess I'll have to figure out what the correct amount is with this bike.

Oh well,
Tom
