Default Dyna Glide education needed!

Hello. Looking to sell my Sporty to move up to a big twin bike. I primarily use this bike for commuting to work every day (highway and urban riding), but I would like something bigger for a few reasons: 1) I am always looking for the "6th gear" on my current 883 when cruising on the highway and would like to go 60mph and 70mph without the engine sounding like it's being rapped out and 2) I would like to be able to ride 2-up comfortably on rare occasions 3) I just want to move up to the BIG TWINS!

I'm5'11"@190lbs.

I'm currently looking at a used 2006 Superglide (FXDI) with low mileage (around 4k). It has a few mods on it (extra chrome,V&H pipes)etc. and looks to be a great bike, in great shape and the color I want!

What I'm curious to know (forgive me if any of these questions have already been asked a million times) is:

1) Superglide vs Wideglide - biggest difference in handling?
2) What are some of the drawbacks going with a superglide (if any)?
3) What should I look out for when looking at a Dyna Superglide?
4) Any particular year to look for or watch out for?
5) Is the FXDI a Sport model and if so, positives or negatives?
6) Anything else I should be considering that I haven't mentioned?

Thanks in advanced!

Super Glide prob handles twisties better than wide but wide is more comfotable on long haul
draw backs mid controls
06 ride and make sure trans is not making noise
FXDI is just fuel injected now standard
how big is your 2 up rider, standard super glide has no passenger seat, how many miles to work, this is not a 883 sporty lots of raw power and vibration

I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions but here are mine for what they're worth.

1. Wideglides are raked out a little more and are setup for larger (taller) riders. You can make any bike fit you though so it really comes down to a look thing. In this example a big difference is the rear fender...traditional wrap around vs. bobtail.

2. None that I know of. Some will tell you speedo location (bars vs. tank) but I like the bar mount so it's really a preference thing.

3. Just make sure it's in good condition and not been beaten behind the woodshed.

4. For me I wouldn't look at anything older than 2006. In 2006 the Dyna's got a complete overhaul and a lot of big improvements were made. Frame, tire size, transmission, battery design, key location, fuel injection (no carbs), etc. That's not to say that there aren't a lot of very nice 2005 and earlier bikes out there but for me all of the design enhancements are too much to pass up.

5. Not a "sport" model per say but let's just say you can throw it aroundif you want to. The thing about Dyna's is they handle like a dream and do what you want them too. Plus they are comfortable for long easy rides so you can get the best of both worlds.

6. Basically all the considerations lie with your preferences. Black or silver engines, speedo locations, bar types (which can be easily changed), chrome or black. Don't let anybody tell you that what you choose is wrong, everybody has opinions but it doesn't mean they're right.

Best of luck in your decision.

If you liked your Sporty, the the 06 FXDI is your ticket. More power, great handling, good occasional two-up, excellent on trips - 300+ Miles.

I'm 6'4" and 235 and have a FXDC which is basically the same bike you are looking at with a bigger tank, tank mounted speedo,2 up seatand some factory chrome above the standard FXD. I'm totally comfortable on the bike after adding forward controls and new handlebars. However, my wife is only 5'0" 115 so she hardly makes a difference on the bike. But, like you, we rarely ride 2 up. Here are my opinions on your questions but they are just that - opinions:

1) Superglide vs Wideglide - biggest difference in handling?
Hard to say because I've never ridden a wide glide. From what I've heard, they don't handle the twisties quite as well because of the front end but that's just in comparison to a standard dyna as I'm sure they hold their own in any case.
2) What are some of the drawbacks going with a superglide (if any)?
None that I can see but then I'm biased. If you are used to a Sporty, you should feel totally comfortable moving to a dyna though.
3) What should I look out for when looking at a Dyna Superglide?
Deer, idiot drivers, potholes, etc. just like on any other bike. LOL - other than that, just look out for dumbasses that still think you are riding a sportster.
4) Any particular year to look for or watch out for?
I agree with PowerCobra - 06 and up but then you'd have to anyway if you are looking for 6th gear. Nothing wrong with the older models but the dyna changed quite a bit in 06.
5) Is the FXDI a Sport model and if so, positives or negatives?
Nope, if it was a sport, it would say so. It's a super glide with EFI - that's it.
6) Anything else I should be considering that I haven't mentioned?
Price. You didn't say what they were asking for the 06 but consider a 2 year warranty on a new bike and I heard they lowered the price on the 08 FXDC to $12,995. That's a steal in my opinion. I just saw a basic 08 FXD in the showroom the other day for $12,300. It may have had the security system on it but nothing else extra. Consider that for $695 more you can get all the added features of the custom.

Awesome replies, just as expected. Thanks!

Price is listed at $11,700. This bike does appear to have forward controls on it.

Also, I amsomewhat hesitant since it is NOT a custom. I bought my current sporty bc I got a good deal on it, even though my heart was set on a 1200C (bigger tank, love the laced wheels, etc). I ended up buying an 883 and I regret it not only bc it's not the 1200, but it didn't have the custom features. Of course, it got my "foot in the door" which is better than nothing (my logic at the time at least)!

Perhaps I'll hold out and look around for a superglide custom. Great info -- Keep it coming!

Thanks!

If you want more chrome and wire wheels go for the 2008 Custom, for the price difference you can't beat it. Either bike is nice. You will probably want forwards, I'm 6'-1" and was really uncomfortable till I put forwards on.

I have a 2001 Superglide and there is nothing wrong with buying a used older bikes either. 2005 and older have carbs for the most part, gives you something to play with while it's warming up.
