06' fxd , when slowing to a stop i notice what i can only explain as a bad vibration. i usually will use some engine braking when coming to a stop. haven't let the dealer know yet, don't want the bike down with the very little riding time i have left. been doing it for a while now anyway's . anybody know how to properly check the front mount?
does it happen when u use the front brake only?both brakesor rear only. try it different ways and without gearing down. this way u might get closer to the trouble.
This seems to be a pretty common complaint with the newer Dynas. My 07 does it, more of a shudder I would call it. I've also got a nasty high frequency vibration from about 2800-3200 rpm, but that's a different story. There's no good way I know of to check the front mount without taking it out and looking to see if the rubber is torn. I've had mine out to look at it, tried shimming it so it wans't stressed when the bolts were tightened, done the alignment proceedure in the manual, even replaced it with one I had left over from an 03. Nothing made any difference. Talk to your dealer, maybe they know something. Don't be surprised if you get the standard answer, though.
Sound like the front brake may be it. If u have a manual take front brake apart and check the pistons they could be sticking . It still new have dealer look at it.Dont use it unless u have too, use the back brake and get in some more riding till it gets to cold..
cannot get in the habit of using the rear brake unless an emergency stop.
like i said i may have the dealer take a look at it. to date my bike has never been inside the service dept., have done all work myself. if it were the mount, what are the chances the dealer would give me the part and let me do it myself?
My 03 FXD developed a vibration after 18,000 mileswhen decelerating. It was most noticable when decelerating from about 2800 to 2000 RPM. It did not matter if I was on the brakes or not. I assumed it was the front motor mount and changed it. The old one looked fine and the new one made no difference. I then ran the bike in neutral on the side-stand and noticed significang vibration (mirrors shaking like heck) at 2000 to 3000 RPM. Since it vibrates when in neutral and not moving, I ruled out wheel balance, warped rotors, allignment, etc. Problem iseither something in the motor or perhaps the rear motor mount. I will be checking the rear mount this weekend.
My 07 Bob vibrates like a Dyna typically does. Not too bad, just enough to let me know I'm on aDyna! I get a bit of shuddder at decel when applying braking - though I use 50% rear and 50% front, it is not significant at all, but there is "slightly" more shudder if I just use the front. This tells me the motor is stressing forward into the frameas the bike slows from the front. Therubber mounts can only isolate so much.
The whole revelation of shimming the mounts to make for more elasticity never sat right with me, and after knowing a few who actually performed the procedure, it never made any difference. My guess is the person who tried it, may have had something else wrong that got fixed in the process of him engineering the new shim mounts.
Anyway, if it is as severe as you describe, and is more present with front braking, my best guess would be your front mount is suspect. HD should and will inspect it and/or replace it under warranty. Best not to mess with such a key part of the bike's structure. My dealer replaced mine under warranty at the 1K check when the tech thought there was too much vibration at idle. I got it back and didn't notice much of a difference, and the shudder is still there and other little vibes...someone told meearlier that I would end up enjoying them as part of the ride - they were right!
Just have your dealer check it out under warranty. Too minor to lose sleep over.
Check all motor mount bolts all three of mine had come loose at some pont also check jiffy stand rubber bumper if it is not positioned correctly it will make a thumping sensation in pegs
