Default Switching to mini apes

I am thinking about swithching my stock '05 superglide handlebars to mini apes. Has anyone made this switch and if so can I retain any of my stock cables. I am planning on going with braided but not all at once for budget reasons.

I changed mine to mini apes , the ones the wide glide has and i had to change the brake and the clutch cable. oh and had to pull some of the excess wire out from under the tank and reroute my throttle cables behind the forks.... the biggest thing for me was changing the clutch cable.. not to much of a big deal tho.... hope this helps...

Thanks Kman that helps, and they are the same bars i'm looking at. I feel sorta streched out with the stock handlebars since I switched to a touring seat.

What he said. Now's a good time to upgrade to stainless brake line. Although you could probably find some stock WG take offs on e-bay.

Be carefull about ordering the right parts. Stock '05 WG bars are 1", and cost about $50. '06 bars are 1 1/4" and cost about $200. The larger HD bars won't fit unless you change your bar clamp, speedo housing, grips, and hand controls.

Personally, I like the aftermarket 1 1/4" bars. They're heavier and vibrate less. Although the specs are the same, their shape is a little bit differant, and the hand grip area is more ergonomic that HD's bars; much more confortable on a long ride. You don't have to upgrade the clamps or grips. But they are still almost $200.

My plan is to add the stock '05 WG bars for $50. Ride them around for a while. If I like them, I'll spring for the better aftermarket bars. If not, I'll choose something else. It's easier to deal with lines that are 2" too long, than 2" too short.

I also changed mine out on my 05

I had to change the brake and clutch lines so I upgraded to Stainless, just made sense.
Then I put on some new grips.
I love the way it feels compared to the stock bars.

Enjoy !
