Default Almost done

I am almost complete with my "new to me" 2004 FXDI. Initially I put stuff on the bike for more comfort for the wife and better touring distance. A couple of week ago, I got the 95" high-output engine build complete. The build was based on the SE-251 cam with SE heads, flat-top pistons (10:1), SE clutch, roller-rockers, lifters, etc, etc. A few more tweaks here and there and I think I'm missing only one last piece, the color-matched front spoiler.

Here it is... Now I just need some nice pictures on the northern Mississippi River valley. I love those Dynas.

Nice. How does the motor pull riding two-up??
Is there a big difference all through the rpm range??
More top end??
Details on the motor work please...

I did quite a bit of research on my engine build, which I knew I would do when I bought the bike. My goal was to do a complete, or as close to possible, Screamin' Eagle build on a Dyna. I wanted a ride that would pull from just off idle through mid to high RPM ranges and not compromise ridability or reliability. I personally feel I have achieved this. Just coming off the initial 500 mile break-in (that's another story) I had the bike out Tuesday for a 150 mile ride with the wife on the hills and twisties along the Mississippi River valley stretch of 35 in Wisconsin. I still have a grin on my face... so enough of the blabbing, here's the build and some explanations of why:

First step, the cam - I chose an SE-251. This is a high-lift, short overlap cam thus would be more of a torque cam.

Second, the compression ratio - I needed to up the compression to take advantage of the cam. I chose to run SE Flat Top pistons for 10:1 compression. I could have done 10.5:1, but 10:1 seemed like the magic point where a tank of sub-grade gas wouldn't turn the bike into a ping monster. These were for 95" jugs, thus new cylinders were also added.

Third, the heads - I chose the SE Performance (MCR) heads and added the compression releases.

Fourth, the exhaust - V&H Pro Pipes. It took me a while to come to grips with a 2-1 pipe, though I'd have lost too much low-end torque with the short-shots that were one the bike when I bought it.

Fifth, the supporting components - I probably overbuild the engine, but it was apart, and I wanted reliability so; SE lifters, perfect fit pushrods, SE roller rockers, and an SE clutch kit.

I had the SERT and Stage I on the bike when I bought it so this is also a part of the build though I didn't have to add this.

St. Paul Harley will likely use this as a reference build. I did deviate from their usual high-output builds. What I really like about the bike is the fact I have power riding two-up from idle to hitting the rev limiter. When you roll on the throttle I can take it from 0-60 without shifting out of 1st. Once I get on the highway at the 70-80 mph range, the harmonics of the engine and exhaust settle down nicely and the bike is an incredibly smooth ride, but barks and pulls with a small snap of the throttle.

If I could do it again, would I -- HELL YEAH! When/if I get a bagger (I'm saving that for when I'm old <grin&gt I might avoid as high of a lift of cam, but this is just what I wanted on my Dyna.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good info - Thanks.
I think the2 into 1 was the best choice - performance wise. Did you put cones in?? Wonder if your build guy thinks they add anything...
Also heads have any port / chamber work - website??
Compression release?? Is that an extra plug hole on one cyl just for starting?? Seems 10:1 wouldn't need it.
Any plans to add a 6th gear??
Sorry for all the questions - but this is the (type) build I'm planning - Stump puller...
Thanks dd

Really nice. Has it been dynoed since the build? If so what is it putting out to the rear wheel?

---I think the 2 into 1 was the best choice - performance wise. Did you put cones in??

I didn't add cones, though I can swap the baffle with the V&H competition baffle. These pipes, with the higher compression engine, are loud enough. I'm fortunate the one of my neighbors I ride with and the other (retired) is an old hot-rodder, so they like the sound. the bike barks when I open the throttle up.

---Also heads have any port / chamber work - website??

No additional head work ... yet <grin>.

---Compression release?? Is that an extra plug hole on one cyl just for starting?? Seems 10:1 wouldn't need it.

It was less than $50 to add the manual compression releases. I know I didn't "need" them on 10:1, but I can tell the difference when I hot-start the bike using the releases vs. not using them.

---Any plans to add a 6th gear??

I have the sickness... I'm already looking at the SE 6-speed. Please don't tell my wife :-D

---Sorry for all the questions - but this is the (type) build I'm planning - Stump puller...

No problem... that's what I got, a real stump puller. I am taking it out with the guys I ride with on Sunday. This will be my first time out with a group since I finished the build and 500 mile break-in. I'm looking forward to some throttle play.

Thanks. I am not going to Dyno until I can re-tune once it's back over 70. The guys that did the build have the SERT tuned for the break-in. They also state that it is difficult to get a good tune in the cold and suggest that I do about 1000 miles, switch back to synthetic, and re-tune (included in the build price). Once that is done I will be putting it on the Dyno. I am curious if it will be over 100 hp. I really don't care about the charts because I know how it feels in the seat. I'd rather have 100 tq across the RPM band than 100 hp at high RPM.

I will post charts once I get them. Both I and St. Paul HD, who did the build are extremely curious in the numbers as this seems like a really solid performing high-output engine build.

cheers.
