Default Need Cam/Engine Advice

I currently own a 2005 EFI Ultra with the following engine mod:
1. 95ci big bore kit
2. SE CNC Ported HTCC Heads
3. SE HTCC Forged Pistons
4. SE HTCC EFI Intake Module
5. SE 211 Cam
6. Breather Kit
7. V&H True Duals
8. SERT

The bike only makes 87hp & 91ft/lbs torque. I expected the engine to make at least 95+hp and 100+ft/lbs of torque. Is the cam the problem? If so, what do you recommend?

Another dealer has recommended a SE 257 cam to me. From what I have been reading on this forum, it appears gear-driven cams are the way to go. I'm leaning towards an S&S 570g cam but the HD dealer won't touch gear driven cams.

Not looking for ultimate power - just more, but still rideable at moderate rpm/speeds.

Thanks.

That head/piston combo requires blueprinting to make good power. The distance from the angled part of the piston to the matching part of the head must be .035" to .040". Due to production variances and the often used .045" head gasket, most htcc builds are not set up correctly. Find a good mechanic who'll take the time to set it up right, and the motor will make good power with the cam you have now.
edit: I'm assuming the bike is tuned correctly now.

I have not seen very many people get good results with that combo.

Skyhook is right you will need some head blueprinting and a cam change to start.

I would try the Head-Quarters 0039 cam if you ride 2 up or the FireStorm .575 if mostly 1 up.
These cams will built alot bigger powerband over the SE cams.

The CNC Ported HTCC Heads are most likely the problem with your build. The others are correct that they needd to be set up properly. That and the fact that they have very large valves that will actually slow velocity a bit can hurt a build. I am running the same heads on my 07, though on a 103" build with a .650 lift cam. Anything less and they will not flow properly and can hurt torque also. Combine that with the larger intake you are running and you are not filling the cylinders properly.

A better combo is the HTCC pistons, the HTCC heads (not the CNC heads) and the Woods TW5G cam with the stock throttle body. Did that build on my 03 RKC with Rineharts and PCIII and made 103 hp and 115 tq.

I agree hole heartedly with this info and have the new RR525 cams that will work great in this engine with the blue printing, good without. When we dyno those low velocity heads against our faster ports we usually find that they will do a 5th gear pull from 2,500 to 5,500 in 8-1/2 seconds against our 5 to 5-1/2 seconds and our heads run much cooler.

Given my (HD dealer) options in the NYC area, blueprinting may not be an option for me. Would have been better off trying something less ambitious ($$$) than the SE HTCC route in the first place - next time.

As for what I can realistically do. I'm leaning towards trying another cam and/or replacing the HTCC intake manifold with something else - perhaps the stock one. I always wondered why theyinstalled the one for the regular HTCC heads (with "D" shaped intake ports), when the CNC Ported heads have regular shaped ports?

Hopefully, I can extract another 5+HP/Torque from this dog without rebuilding the engine and breaking the bank?

Thanks for your help.

Replaced the SE 211 cams with SE 257 and had the intake manifold machined to properly match the ports. Picked-up 8hp/6ft-lbs torque.Of course, I could have used an even bigger cam but since the bike is mainly used for touring (not racing) I didn't want to lose low-end torque/reliability and have an overly noisy engine.

The next step would be to replace my V&H True Duals with a good 2 into 1 pipe, which would take me over 100hp.

I now have 95hp/97ft-lbs torque.

As for the cam chain tensioners - they were still in good shape after 10,000+ miles! Nevertheless, had the dealer polish the chain and replace the pads. Should be good for a long time- without losing any sleep.

Cheers and thanks for your suggestions.

A good friend of mine has almost the exact same set up, his is a 03 RKC with differences being a PCIII and a thunder header 2-1. Had it tuned by Dr, Dyno ( Fred Eno) and his numbers came out to 96 HP and 101 TQ after an hour and a half on the dyno.
