Default Adding Tach to 07 FXD

I was planning on doing the tach addition kit from the Moco on my FXD this winter, but figured I would have a go at scrounging up the parts I would need on Ebay first. Found a tach and the mounting bracket, but before I bid on them I need to figure on how the tach gets wired in.
I assume the moco kit includes the wiring harness to add the tach, but can't find anything definitive answer on that yet.

Anyone who has used this kit or had a late model FXD with a tach might have the answer I am looking for. It comes down to whether or not it's worth bidding on the used parts and get hosed buying a wiring harness add on to tie it in or just buy the kit straight up from Zanottis for 236 clams.

Jay, I saw your other thread too.

Unclear exactly what you're doin.

Tach/speedo side by side in front of the bars???
Right??

Just added this to my 06 FXD couple weeks ago.

Picked up the kit at 50% off at my favorite parts counter.

You confused me on the handlebar clamp, wrinkle black,
sportster - which one what year??

Tach wiring is very straightforward (kinda sorta).

I've done the mini tach and the dual speedo/tach setup. The mini tach calls for you to splice into the ignition wiring. The combo set plugs straight into the existing contector but for the later model you are looking at extending the harness about 5" to make it work. If you can wait about a week I believe I still have the installation instuction for both. I can scan you a copy after I pick up my bikes next week.

BTW - if you want the mini tach I let go of it for $75 with the clamps and mount I made for it.

Either way if you want a copy ofthe instructions let me know.

Here's what I am working on now. It's the 2 5/8" HD tac w/ shift light. I have sportster risers with drag bars and the under mount speedo. wanted something more subtile, but having the tac mounted a bit higher will provide better visibility to this and the shift light so it is what I decided to go with.

Zuma,
I know on mine everything plugs into a 12 pin connector. Best bet is to go to the dealer a take a look at the instructions. They should be willing to help you if you are about to drop $500.00. If the won't help you, find a different dealer.

Mud,
I put up that post about the Sporty bar clamp cause I just wanted to get a stock piece off a 1200 sporty that was already wrinkle black. This was inline with the side by side Tach/Speedo set up in front of the bars like you stated.
It would be great if I could get a 50% off deal, cause if that was the case, I wouldn't even shop Ebay for used stuff, I'd be willing all over buying a new set up at that kind of price. Maybe you could help me out?

I just didn't know how the wiring in of the tach went, if I bought used parts versus the kit. I was not sure if the kit came with a wiring harness add onto plug it right into the exsisting harness or would I need to splice it in myself.

.

Jay, you can splice in the wiring
or, lengthen the harness that comes with the kit
by a minimum of six inchs (I went eight),
or, use harness as supplied
and leave the Deutsch connector exposed -
like Splatter did.

The harness alone is about 60 bux.

As to the bar clamp, looking at the install sheet
that I received (pix below), the earlier Dynas
also used the wrinkle black component.

Myownself, I prefer these critical instruments
up there in front of the bars, where they are easily viewed.
I'm not really a cruiser, or a curb appeal fanatic,
so, when I want to take a peek at the needles,
leisure is not an option.

I was in the right place right time for the 50 off.
Walked in, asked about the tach kit,
parts guy says yeah, we got one over here on the 20 off table.
I told him to make that 50 off
and we could talk cold hard cash on the barrelhead.
He called the parts manager, and the deal was done.

*IF* you can find on eBay, that's great.
I think I paid somethin like 140 - my lucky day.

Answer your ? - yes kit comes w harness.

While I am thinking about it,
Zanottis now has an online "chat" line.
They are good at part #s - and QUICK.
Used it earlier this week on some other parts.

Some pix below of tach install with shift light, 06 FXDI
and a couple scans from the install sheet for the 04 tach kit.

Jay with the FXD and the 2 5/8 tach kit this is about the easiest way I could come up with. I have since added a 2" tank lift and it still has plenty of clearence.
