So I'm thinking about getting a tach and mount from a fxdx or fxr for my 04 fxd. Before I do this I'm just curious as to the installation of it. I know I'll need a mounting bracket but other then that will I need a new wiring harness and how do I place the speedo into the mount? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
i added a tach to my 03 fxd i went with the tach addition kit from harley it comes with mount for tach and speedo that mounts in same spot just puts gauges side by side pretty easy to install instructions could be better though i had a wiring diagram from a service manual that helped alot the kit came with every thing needed just took headlight off to get to wiring harness and had to take that apart where it plugs together and add the wires for the tach to the harness pins that weren't being used but looks good and works well

04-up tachs take thier input from the J1850 data bus. Earlier tachs look the same but won't work. No way, no how. The factory tach addition kit costs like hell, something like $285 if i remember right. If you can come up with the bracket you can get a take-off 04-up touring bike tach cheap off ebay and go to harley and get the mini-plug for the speedo, then use the wiring diagram to figure out which wires go where. I think it's only like 3 wires you have to run to the tach. I did mine for a total cost of about $45.
I'm selling my speedo, tach and bracket from my 04, FXDX and might be selling the plugs if I don't need them for my conversion. The speedo has 7,287 miles on the clock.
Low miles because I'm always working when the weather is good for riding.
