Default Chrome Slider swap -rounded bolt #*&(!

So, I was 100% prepared, did everything right -and still rounded the 6mm bolt on the worst side, the hardest one to get to. (The one that needed the long 6mm)

The left slider that came off easy will be a snap to finish(I have chromed aftermarket sliders ready to swap).

My plan is to drill the head off the bolt enough to drop the slider, then just keep drilling out the threads into the damper. It was on so tight (I did use an impact wrench), I dont think an easy-out will do it...I also have never used or own easy outs anyways.

Any comments of encouragement, sarcastic mocking or alternate ideas strongly welcomed!!

PS. Wouldn't have tried all this without this site.

It was most likely put on with locktite so it wouldn't come out. I would heat the bolt with a propane torch and then use vice grips on it. If that doesn't work I would get a left handed drill bit and an easy out.

I only wish I could get at it with the pliers!! Sounds like the perfect plan

It's a 98 wide Glide and the slider is the side with the one piece bottom (no separate clamp to drop) you know, the axle goes thru the hole and you need the long 6mm to get to the bolt from the bottom... I only know Wide Glide sliders, don't know if the narrower fork sliders are the different.

I'm pretty sure a drill bit will fit thru .........

Maybe an easy-out would work.. (never used one). Does anyone know if it would be long enough to reach the bolt??

I have had some sucess using a flat screw driver bit with an impact screw driver on stripped socket head/allen bolts.

FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO.. SMACK THAT BOLT WITH A PUNCH, AND HARD! that will stretch the threads and break any grip that lock tite has on it... then i would just use an easy out, or file it down and use a flat head screw driver... i have had this happen a ton of times... be sure to smack it good with a punch!

I had the same trouble with my right side, withthe clamp. A little shorter distance, but I used a torx bit that fit the rounded allen hole pretty well. I forget the size, but I had to persuade it a bit to fit, couple of taps from the hammer, then impacted it out.. You could try that if you could find a long enough torx bit. Another idea would be to go your drill bit path, but make sure to use a left handed bit. This will verry possibly back the bolt out while drilling. A little heat may help too..

I like that plan of attack.. smash an oversized bit into the rounded useless hole (There's a joke in there somewhere).. I just need to find a longer torx or allen wrenches...worth a try.. just wish i hadn't return impact wrench from rental store. I do have a hand held /use a hammer style to use tho.

Thanks to all... took a few trys to explain myself..
