Default RE: Dakota Digital Speedo install

Hey Jonas. I have recently installed such a unit. I too went through hell trying to get the unit hooked up to work with the OEM VSS. I had several sources indicate it would work, but none could, or would, tell me how. I spent several days fighting it without success. Some of the older, non-EFI bikes were no problem to get it working. The newer EFI models complicate things. Not only does the VSS send the signal needed to the stock speedo, but also to the Throttle Positioning Sensor and the Manifold Air Pressure Sensor. This prevents you replacing the OEM VSS with a universal VSS.

Based on an installation done by another forum member (Clutch66), I elected to installed a second VSS (the universal sensor included with the new speedo). This turned out to be very simple. The universal VSScounts passing metal with a magnetic pick-up. The OEM VSS works the same way by sensing the passing of the teeth on the transmission's fourth gear.

Clutch66 made his universal sensor work by mounting it on the inside of the right-side of the swing arm. He positioned it so it would line-up with the rear brake rotor mounting bolts. As his rotor rotates, the magnetic sensor picks-up the passing of the bolt heads and sends a signal to the speedo which converts it into a display of the bike's speed. He drilled a hole in his swing armfor a mounting bolt to secure the universal VSS in place.

I wasreluctant todrill my swing arm and chose to mount the sensor another way. I had previously installed a decorative axle nut cover which used a flange above, and another flange below the swing arm to secure it. I used the lower flange as a mounting point for my VSS. Using a longer bolt, a nylon bushing, and a few washers, I was able to mount and align the VSS to pick-up the rotor bolt heads. I used a feeler gauge to make sure the VSS was less than 1/16" away from the bolt heads.

There are a couple related pictures below. The first is a picture of my universal VSS mounted to the axle nut cover. The picture is not great, but I think it will give you an idea of what I have done. The second picture is a stock picture from Harley of the axle nut covers (44346-06) Iinstalled and used to mount the VSS.

After the VSS is mounted and aligned, it is just a matter of connecting the three wires and calibrating as instructed in the unit's manual.

IF you didn't get a universal VSS with your speedo, you have several options to consider for purchase. You can buy one like I used. You can also purchase an axle mounted VSS which get its signal from the rotation of the rear axle. There are several different types shown on www.dakota.com.

Let me know if you have additional questions. Good luck!

I'd love to know how you got the stock VSS to work if you can share the details. Thanks!

Sorry for the late reply, jmpancoast.
Well, for a start i had to get me the service manual to get the electrical schematics.
According to the install instruction that came with the speedo, you should connect
the grey wire (from speedo)to the white one on the VSS. The thing is, that on my 07 Street Bob
there is no white wire. So what i did, was to just connect the grey wire to the white/green
(stock harness) on the vss, thats for the 'vehicle speed sensor input'. The white and white/red (from speedo)
i didnt use at all.
To be honest, I got some help from another member here, bolverk.
My writing in english isnt the best, but i hope this is helpful.
