My 98 LR wants to diesel some after I get off the freeway where my style of riding is about 70 to 80 mph. Get off the highway, pull in the driveway or up to the gas pump, shut her off and it will diesel but not everytime, maybe every 5th or 6th time. Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening? Try to buy my gas at the same Walmart everytime to rule out different stations adding different things. Also would like to know where the gas filter is? Thanks!
The gas filter is actully on the petcock in the fuel tank. Personnaly I would run some name brand gas and in particular like Shell or Chevron. Try adding some "seafoam" to your gas (autozone, NAPA). Check your plugs for mixture, if you are rich there are carbon deposits glowing in your cylinders, after youremove the electrical spark (turning the ignition off) the carbon could be igniting the fuel mix. The seafoam helps remove carbon deposits while you are riding.
Cool, thanks for the info. I will try the seafoam. I've checked my plugs several times, though not exactly the way I have been reading here, but they look like they are burning okay. This is my first H. D. so I'm still learning my way around it. I think the carb has been rejetted because the plugs gone. When I got it the air mixture was only out maybe a quarter turn and I have moved it out about 2 turns. I tried adjusting it warmed up and running but it didn't seem to make any difference no matter where you turned it. I'll keep tinkering with it till I find a happy median that it likes and I like. Any other suggestions. Thanks again.
Thanks for everyone's input. Should have been more clear on the octane boost. I only bought one bottle and used it like 3 times, usually every other fill up. I did some adjusting on the carb which helped and the last 3 or 4 tanks have been using the premium grade instead of the mid grade and so far it hasn't dieseled at all. I read on another post about the exhaust smoot in the pipeswas supposed to be a rusty color but mine is real black and the chrome about 4" from the end of the pipe is starting to get a little rusty color and not blue. The chrome on the rest is still looking good except for that 4 or 5 inches just before the end of the pipes. Is my fuel mixture off or does my carb need rebuilding? It doesn't adjust out the way everything I've read says it should or maybe I'm just not doing it right.
Well, I got the dieseling problem fixed and all the fluids changed. Carb needed adjusting and I been buying the premium grade gas. So far it hasn't dieseled once.
