I have a chance to buy a 98 Super Glide w/ about 22k miles. It looks like it's been well cared for. Oil was changed regularly including primary and trans oil. What can I expect from the engine, like chain tensioners, top end wear etc? What about the rest of the bike in general.I have never owned a HD and I'm not looking to buy a bunch of problems. I would appreciate your feedback.
The current owner has had it for eight yrs. he rode it regularly when he first bought it less as the years went by and as I understand it not much at all the last couple of years.
Should be a reliable bike, unless it's already got an issue. Most likely things that'll come up on a bike that's been sitting:
1. Tires should be given a VERY careful look. I'd consider wanting new rubber.
2. Brakes and brake cylinder/piston issues. Seals can rot.
3. Rotton fuel damage. Carb probably needs a cleaning at the very least. Might as well do the filter.
4. Run a compression test.
5. Battery shot.
6. Other gasket and seal leaks, cable inspections.
Take it to a good shop for an inspection and tune. If the price was right, it'd be in my garage right now.
HD is one of the most reliable bikes over the long run. Yea, yea, beemer guys, I know you don't wanna be left out. You hardly ever see a metric bike with 100K - I see harleys all the time that've spun the clock over. I was a Kaw guy for years. A Kaw with 50K was past ready for a full rebuild. An SG is just getting "seasoned." Regular maint, buy the SM, good gas, keep the battery and tires tended, and you're good to go. Most likely you'll spend ten times as much on crap...I mean mods...then you'll ever spend on repairs.
