Default Questions for the Squadron

Hi guys! Two questions for ya. I know that these have probably been addressed in other topics but did a search and either couldn't find the old threads or couldn't find what I was looking for so here goes.

A while back we were discussing removal of passenger pegs and belt drive covers. While I want to remove my passenger pegs, I don't want to remove the belt guard. Unfortunately, in Harley's infinite design wisdom, the bracket that holds the left passenger peg also supports the belt guard so if you remove the peg mount, there is nothing to secure the belt guard to. I was talking to my service manager about this and he said I had two options. Have an L shaped bracket fabricated to secure the belt guard to, or have someone who can weld cut the peg/belt guard mount and then sand it down so you have an L shape bracket already in place. This last option makes sense to me and as luck would have it, he can perform such a service on his lunch hour for me. I am planning on him doing it on Wednesday when I take it in for my 5k mile service. I know it's a permanent solution, but I don't ever plan on riding two up and if I ever sell the bike I figure I can get a replacement part to mount the pegs back on to. What do you guys think?

Second question. Front signal indicator relocation to the forks. Harley doesn't have the kit yet for the 08's and from what I understand, the ones that Harley comes out with stick out like sore thumbs. I know that some of you have already made this mod on your Fat Bobs. What after market part did you use? I figure I can go to an independent bike mechanic and have him install them for me. Harley might but they'd charge me an arm and a leg to do it.

That's it for now! Thanks in advance!

Can't help you with the belt guard, but maybe with the turn signal relocation. What size are the forks on the Fat Bobs? 49mm? If so, that is the same as the Street Bobs. I used the Kuryakyn 49mm relocation brackets. I think they were about $50 at the dealer. You'll have to get new bolts, though. The ones that come fit Kury lights, not H-D lights. Pick up two 5/16-24x3/4" panhead bolts. The ones in the kit are course thread and will not work, they are 5/16-18x3/4".

Hi Blade. To be honest I'm not sure what size the forks are! I believe it's supposed to be a wide glide front end but I can't swear to that. I saved the website you sent and will print out your post and take it to the guy over here who does independent work. I'm sure he can take it from there. Thanks!

Scooter, here's a third option for you on the belt guard.

Hey Wench (damn, i always wanted to say that to a womanand it not end up in divorce court):

Not a member of the squadron, but might have a couple fixes for you.

The FXDIs and FXDBIs come OEM as one up and have a bracket for the upper belt guard. The part # is 49216-06. I would imagine you could put arequest for one in the subject line of a post in the Dyna forum and someone would offer up their take off.

For the front signals, look at this from Mud's under 50 bucks thread:

https://www.hdforums.com/m_2546488/m...tm.htm#2677761

I have a pair of these ball mount recepticles already drilled if you need them. Let me know and cover the shipping.

Front Signal Relocation Kit: http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup...4-84B9155EBA9A

Only about $32 shipped.

You'll also want post #2 from this thread: https://www.hdforums.com/m_1336993/tm.htm

I assume you already have your service manual. Yes?

--

But let me warn you... The signals on our bikes are internally wired. The turn signal wire runs through the black mesh housing that runs from beneath the tank and through the triple trees.

I got to a point in the disassembly (remove seat, disconnect battery, disconnect fuel line, hoist tank, etc.) where I saw that I had three options.

1) Cut the wires at the hand controls and re-splice them later (I'm not convinced this is the only way out)
2) Take it to a professional (I'm not ready to admit defeat).
3) Open the hand controls and see if the signals could be properly dismounted from that end. (I haven't gotten around to trying this yet. Maybe I'll do it today since I have some time.)

Good luck.

Let me know how it goes.

I think the Kury relocation kits comes with two sets of parts, one for 39-41 mm forks and one for 49 mm forks. The 49 mm part is just a flat plate that bolts on the bottome. It comes with a longer bolt to replace the OEM one. I think. Sometimes my old timers disease gets to me.

Old Guys Rule.

Hey Wench, did the same thing to my Custom, removed the pegs and bought that exact bracket. Surprised your dealer didn't go right to it in the parts book. Piece of advise the screw you take out of the peg mounts will work in the "L" bracket because it is threaded. In the parts breakdown it looked to thin to be threaded, but it is.
