Here is the bottom line on the reason, damage and repairs. Back in 06 HD did not offer chrome pulley bolts for the FXDBI. The selling dealer put in bolts for a softail and they have a longer bolt and a collar that does not fit the 06. They put in the longer bolts and no Locktite. The damage is worse than I thought, The bottom of the engine case has a scratch, swingarm is dented, upper belt guard bent and scratched, belt is frayed, pulley is rounded out and so is the wheel hub and the tire is flat spotted. The only HD store I useis not thethe selling dealer and they are replacing EVERYTHING at no cost to me. Warranty will pick up the charges andthis dealerwill check the torque on all the bikes they sell and service. I also know that there are only a few techs that short cut the bikes they work on. So no offence intended to those that do the job correctly. HD doesnt consider pulley bolts "critical"! Im done with this nightmare and thx again............
Jeez, what a nightmare. Glad it turned out ok. Having a good dealer/indy is great, but this really highlights doing our own checks as well. Sure as hell got my attention.
Thanks for the post
It happened to me also. I nearly lost it. I was on a merge ramp onto the interstate so I was in the throttle!
I found two of the bolts. One was buried about halfway through the swingarm! No Loc-tite!!! Dealer reaplce everything including the rear wheel, pully, swingarm and belt at no charge.
Good luck!
TSinger,The slide was exciting to say the least? I also have damage to the swingarm and that will be replaced. Did you have the dealer change your pulley or was it stock? I am wondering with the amount of riders with the same problem happening to them why isnt HD doing a safety alert? Is there litigation pending from someone getting hurt or worse? I was reading my service book this morning and it states that the bolts on the pulley "SHOULD BE INSPECTED at 5K".
