Default Security system

I am looking into a new Street Bob or Super Glide Custom. I am trying to cut cost where ever I can. I have heard mixed reviews about the security system. Anyone have any thoughts?

It should save you on your insurance. I did not have on my FXD but got it from the factory on my FXDB and received a discount on my rate.

If a pro really wants your bike they will get it with or without a security system. IMO, the few hundred to deter a wanna be hack thief and the discount on insurance made it a good investment for me.

Plus, since you don't need a key to ride your bike, you may well walk away after shutting it down without remembering to lock the ignition. I did that my first trip to work, but fortunately I work on a military base, so when I remembered a couple of hours later, I didn't worry too much, but if I was in town, I'd have panicked! With the security system, the bike just won't start.

As noted, that won't deter determined theives, but then again, neither will locking the ignition and/or forks.

I think it's a pretty simple and cost effective piece of mind.

[Edit] Oh, you can always add it later for about the same cost, so if funds are tight now, skip it and put it on when you get some spare change.

A guy and his wife and kid were arrested at Sturgis Bike Week a couple years ago with 4-6 stolen bikes in the back ofa truck. He was stealing them in broad daylight at the Harley Delaership in Rapid City. In all the commotion nobody noticed until a guy saw his bike being pushed into the truck. I wonder how many he got before he was caught? I bet he has done it for years. Oh, and they were all armed.

yeah i like the alarm system alot, although it does come as standard here ( UK ) I would have got it regardless. I dont get how the guy could wheel armed bikes away unless he had some kind of universal fob because as soon as you take mine of the side stand it starts squawking and if it doesnt get put back it goes nuts..

Its pretty simple here in the UK as SK8ROD says it comes standard here in the UK. Actually my insurer had it as a pre-requiste along with a Thatcham approved disc lock for getting insured.

Works pretty good and is great for peace of mind - I am thinking of getting the pager add on.

The Harley security system is sourced from Scorpio. I got my bike without it and added the Scorpio i500 system myself for a lot less $$.

I have the one that came stock on my 06, I never use it, in fact I don't remember how to.Good luck getting the dealer to leave it off though where I live the dealers tack on all sorts of extra crap you may or may not want and refuse to sell you the bike without it.IMO it's useless without the alarm siren.

PS I live and work in small towns with low crime rates and have never had a motorcycle stolen.

Without the additional audible alarm and a paging system (both = more $$) it is damn near worthless, imho. If a pro thief wants your scoot he'll either jam a couple bars through the wheels and lift into a van or put one of those little skatebord-like thingees under each wheel and roll it into a van or truck. It will be nothing but parts in an hour so a 'no start' security system is worthless.

Either get the audible alarm and paging or just get good insurance.

Mine came stock with the factory alarm, and I added the siren and pager - as well as LoJack.

The newer alarm systems are based on the proximity of the alarm fob, and will arm and disarm automatically - which is a nice feature.

As others have said, it can lower your insurance rate, and it makes your bike a more difficult target.

The siren and pager are invaluable when your bike is out of sight.

Considering most of us spend a lot more money for other mods to our bikes, I consider the alarm money well spent.
