I've got a set of throwover saddlbags for the Fat Bob and I'm wondering if saddlebag supports are really necessary or if they are a convenience item. My bags have a soft neoprene-like pad where they rest on the rear shock sleeves. I can't seem to find any supports that are listed as fitting a Fat Bob anyways, so I'm wondering ifI need them at all...any thoughts or experiences?
I was wondering the same thing I haven't seen any supports for the fat bob either can some one point me in the right direction. I was told you should get them to help keep them from flapping around.
Depends on the bags. Some will stay out of the wheels/rotor/axle by themselves. You generally will need to tie the bottoms down so that they don't fly up at high speeds.
Measure the distance on center between the fender strut bolts - if it's around 6", I may have a set to sell for cheap.
My throwovers had no neoprene backing, just straight leather, and they hacked my paint job PDQ, I don't care what material it's made of eventually it will blemish the paint.
Its better to have them than to not in my opine. I have trowovers and I didnt have supports for them for a few months, I didnt like it so I decided to get a set. guess what? I couldnt find any for the fat Bob, no aftermarket out yet, and HD doesnt have any either. I found a set that was fairly close in a jubk pile, paid 10 bucks for em. I had two options, cut a section out from one end and get it welded back on, or just cut a section out in the midle of the bottom width and clamp them together with a piecr of hose, I chose to cut them. They are fugly as hell but they are behind the bags so you cant see them without looking hard anyway. That will do me till I find some aftermarket supports that fit. Seems HD made the strut bols just a tad dif length apart an no existing comp makes any yet, at least none I could find. trow overs will scuff your paint but you can usualy buff it out if you dont let it get too bad, or do like I plan on, put something under to protect the paint.
