Ok, got my mini apes and they look great. I am wondering if anyone has drilled them to run internal wires, or if that will be a PITA. What size bit was used if it is possible. Thanks for any help you can offer.
its no hard to do and looks a lot better.
if i question, just \\; use a GOOD quality step bit and keep going til it all fits.
then just make sure the edges of the hole are smooth.
use the smallest hole you can get away with (good advice for many things)
cant remember what size i used but i only had about 4 wires on the right and 5 on the left.
i deleted a lot of stuff
not to mention i have internal throttle on the right so i had to machine the master cylinder housing and....
ok it kinda sucked to do on mine, but if using a stock setup, it will be easier.
and the way it looks after makes it totally worth it
you should be able to pull a cotton ball though the hole with out it getting caught then you have it filed down enought... just drilling is not enought... i also taped then shrink wrapped my wires for good measuere when ever i do an internal wire... dont wna to have that be the reason the biek will not run!
on the bottom where both sets of wires come out you need to drill 2 holes and then connect them to have enough room. i used a Dremel with a cut off wheel. used Dremel with cone shaped grinder to smooth all the edges also.
If you do a signal re-locate to the forks you lessen the wires you have to run through the bars. \\; You can fit the wires through two holes at the knurls without cutting the slot. \\; I used a tweezer to snag the Molex pins as they came by the holes. \\; +1 on the shrink wrap. \\; I used the braided stock wire covering as well so it was tight against the holes going in and out. \\; It is the friction back and forth that will cut through the insulation, so loose wires slapping a rough edge will eventually fail on you. \\; I relied heavily on this link: \\; https://www.hdforums.com/m_1328001/tm.htm
Good luck.
Thanks for all the great info!! This might be a even worse question, but \\;if I shrink wrap and tape the wires, did you do that over the black plastic coating of the wires or get rid of that all together?
Yeah, that plastic coating has to go. BUT..... make sure you leave enough intact so it runs from the switches into the hole at the end of the dimple (with an inch or two to spare). Then at the other end I left enough so there was an inch or two inside the bars between the risers, and then it runs out and into the frame. \\; So basically the only place there is not that coating on mine is between the hole in the dimple and the hole at the riser. \\; It's tight, but you can work that covering over the wires and into the hole. \\; This is done after the wires are routed through both holes in and out.
