ON my 08 Fat Bob...The manual say's... that you can do a cold check of your engine oil which should read at the half mark on your dip stick...then when you warm the engine to normal temps the oil \\;will rise to the full mark..Mine however there is no difference between cold check and HOT check..or if there is its very small difference that I can't really see with the naked eye....anyone else see the rise from half mark cold..to full mark.
when my engine is cooled off say 4 , \\;5 hours or overnight it reads \\;one square down from the full hot mark,and when hot straight on the full line.
2.5 quarts of oil basically doesn't expand with heat or contract with cold.
 \\;
An oldtime wrencher explained that a lot of engines will allow some oil to drain back from the oil reservoir into the engine sump after sitting for a period of time. After start up \\; the oil is pumped up to the oil reservoir and then you get a correct reading.
 \\;
My 03 sportster when it sits over a winter will show \\;1 or more quarts low on the dipstick. It was a fresh oil change before storing. I start it up and a few minutes later, after shut down, I have a full level on the dipstick. (There is a fix for this on the forum FYI). If I added oil before start up I'd be overfull by 1 or 2 quarts. \\; My 03 Wide Glide does not do this.
