an expansion on this question... why do the catalogs and manufacturers claim there is such a HP gain to be had from just plug wires? I have seen claims in excess of 12hp just by changing plug wires.
what gives? (beyond the usual marketing hype) Are the plug wires from the moco really that bad?
For electronic ignition, 7mm is standard. 8mm just gives you a little more insulation.
Cables are like the coil and plugs. You get as much spark energy as you need. And no more. For a stock bike, there's absolutly no advantage to bigger cables or coils. No power to be made there. If you have a built engine with high cylinder pressures - FI, NO, etc - then you might need all that extra power to make a good spark.
