Default Spark plug wires

What is the stock size for spark plug wires? I think it's 8mm, but can't find it written anywhere in my service manual. Can anybody confirm?

an expansion on this question... why do the catalogs and manufacturers claim there is such a HP gain to be had from just plug wires? I have seen claims in excess of 12hp just by changing plug wires.

what gives? (beyond the usual marketing hype) Are the plug wires from the moco really that bad?

I think the stock wires are 7mm. The older SE wires are 8mm and they're definitely fatter than stock.

For electronic ignition, 7mm is standard. 8mm just gives you a little more insulation.

Cables are like the coil and plugs. You get as much spark energy as you need. And no more. For a stock bike, there's absolutly no advantage to bigger cables or coils. No power to be made there. If you have a built engine with high cylinder pressures - FI, NO, etc - then you might need all that extra power to make a good spark.

on a side note, the modern HD has a very good ignition coil and it offer lots of spark energy to the plug IF the wires are in satisfactory condtion.

the Hi energy coils are hard on cables and being always exposed to the elements I recomend replacing them every 2 to 3 years for best perfmance.

for an alternitve sparkplug cable see: Magnecor.com
