I think apes look f'n sick on bikes! But for the set up I had in mine, I think the drag bars looked better. I know what you mean about the wobble at 70 mph. I used to get the same thing. It made me kind of nervous if I pushed it through the twisties. As far as comfort, I would say the apes were as comfortable as my drags.
This is my first bike with mini ape bars(first Harley), so I'm still getting used to 'em. I don't notice any "wobble" at all. My only issue is the wind catching my upper body and kickin' my butt at 70-80 mph, but the bike is very stable.
Being short and having a short reach, the mini apes are alot more comfy for me...but I do like the looks of drag bars.
Mine are the pull back style and I really like the postion. Not too leaned forward while riding. Hands are slightly lower than the stock bars were.
I didnt mind the apes, just wanted a different look.
I, also, did away w/ the apes and went to the MoCo "Swingbacks". Let my 6'5" frame sit back some and "sail effect" is all but gone. As said, to each his own, and I personally like the lower stance w/ better handling and no tingling hands after 2 hours. That's what's great about the HD's, the options are unlimited.

It was just the other side of the coin compared to the statement that pretty much started the controversy.
First statement was only drags, this one only apes...both statements had no regard that either could be practical.
Wasn't meant to sound that way. I have ridden with both setups. I dont think the original poster has, hence my post.
With my apes i have just as much control, if not more. It centers the weight of my body on my bike so braking is improved it is more 50/50. With the drags your weight is forward on your arms throwing more of the rider weight forward taking the bike off balance. Hence a-lot of guys complain about back problems with drags. It is because of the way it puts all of your body weight on your arms, and into the front of the bike.
Why do I have what on my bike - "Mini-Apes"? That's a Harley term. I imagine if I wanted drag bars for my bike, and ordered them from Harley, I could just ask for a set of "Flat Apes".
As for why I have those particular bars on my bike. That's what it came with. Had it come with real apes, I would have taken them off, and replaced them with either mini apes or flat apes.
I didn't mean to offend your choice..I just wandered why you say you don't like apes and then have a pic of your bike with them on it. As far as "Harley terminology" I didn't realize there were "real" apes and non "real" apes. Harley may use the term mini but I believe it is just a description of them being shorter than other apes, since there are so mini different sizes. Funny how a harley can be your second favorite thing <using your words> and then sound like you are trying to bash them for coining a term for describing an item. Flat apes???? what the hell does that mean anyway? Oh...more Harley slamming I guess....well...they took a healthy chunk of your change when you bought into their product so I guess they'll still get the last laugh on ya.
I have 16" apes with 2" riser's. At first it was sloppy with the rubber mount's. Changed it out with polyurethene mount's. Now it is tight. No movement like before.
I'm headed to the stealership to get different mounts, i'll try that first as it would be the cheapest route first try. My bars move forward and back an 1-2".... not good. I've checked the torque spec and they are w/in spec. Trying mounts first, that doesn't fix it they're comin off.
..and to the poster that said i haven't tried dragbars, see my pics albums for my duece. The Deuce seat sat to low for me, the forward controls were back 2" from my dyna and the drags had a pullback on them. It was ok for under 200 mile trips but anything over that the back and neck paid for it..
if I go drags, i'll get straight risers and a minimal pull back bar. I'm not the smallest guy..
Have a Bob with the minis..and after a short adjustment period..like em just fine. my own experience with drags are that they look cool..but having my hands face flat and forward instead of up and at an angle..was not too comfortable at all,,and i can't imagine long distance riding with em.
I live in the Phoenix area too and I have a neighbor who is a cop. He told me to go past the cameras on the shoulder of the road if I was on my bike because the sensors are between the lines in the lane. These things must measure your speed based on two sensors a certain distance apart and times between them. I really don't know, but I pass them on the shoulder as he suggested

we should....as a matter of fact, if you want to take my Fat Bob (drag bars) up the road and check it out maybe it will help you in your decision. If you seriously want to meet up and ride PM me and maybe next week we can get together on that. I am lucky. I get off work beginning next weekend for two weeks til after New Years Day so I will be up for it if you are.
