I am considering putting a big bore kit on my SB, but have heard mixed opinions from folks that have had it done. For those that have had it done to their bike would you recommend it or recommend using the money for other mods?
There are other mods I would do to the engine before the big bore, in prep for the big bore. Such as the timken bearing upgrade and welding and rebalancing the crank.
... but the big bore kit is in the list of mods I'd like to do... someday... maybe.
I didn't vote in your poll. I don't think it's a waste of money to do the 103 build, but I believe I would do the cosmetic mods to make you bike yours before I would do the build. While I'm glad I did the build, I had more fun doing cosmetic, personal mods.
Are you happy with the way it runs now? Does it have enough power for you now? Is the WOW or SMILE factor high enough for you? If the answer is no, then go for it. Or start small and drop in a Woods 6 cam and see if that's enough. With a Woods 6 you can always reuse the cam and go 103 and heads later. Just my opinion.
Good advice if money is tight & ya can't do it all at once. You'll get sufficient gains by adding the woods tw6-6 cams & can have a good set of heads built in the mean time & do the big bore when your all saved up! Doin just big bore & no cams or headwork I think sucks!

I actually appreciate you bringing that up because I had always heard the term "timken" but never knew what it was. I found a very good explanation HERE
From that video, I found out the oem bearings are from a company called Ina. Where I live, Ina is a major employer having 3 or 4 plants throughout the town . Who knew.
