Anyone had problems with the tail light staying on? My buddy noticed it yesterday. I can press the front or rear brake, and it brightes only a mili-fraction. You really have to be staring at it to notice it. What can I check?
Is this the brake light you are talking about, or is it the running light. The running light stays on when the key is on. The brake light goes on when the brake is applied. If the brake light goes on only for a short period of time, I would check the connections on the rear brake switch. Have you removed the handgrip clamp from the front brake side, if so check and see if you have a problem with the brake switch.
Thanks Superdog. I put the chrome switch housing on this weekend. I just went and pulled off and found a little button that needs to be depressed to work. I must not put the clamp back on just right.

check that stoplight switch. unless you used a shim or washer to "depress" the brake lever you broke the end of the switch. you can tell by wiggling your front brake lever. if your brake light stays on or comes on real quick you can either replace the switch. OR use some jb weld and build up the switch where it broke. approx 2mm.
I put chrome switch covers on my sportster and had the same problem... I ended up having to put a small piece of a credit card on the lever to get it to go off... I cut a small piece off a card and crazy glued it to the back side of the lever and it's still there to this day.... I tried everything to fix it but never did!
On the front brake switch inside the housing it needs to be held in place by a small shim that came with the original housing. It might have fallen out when you changed the housing, it is just a small metal strip bent into a V shape. I'm sure you can make something work just fine. Without this shim holding the switch in place it will keep the brake light on all the time....
I know this is old but I am having the same problem...my tail light socket actually burnt, got me a new one today under warranty and I find that it is stuck on. I took my bars apart to move my blinkers down to the forks but didnt notice anything fall out. How does the front brake actuate the light...I dont see any wires going to it?
