Question about switch key?
I know that there is not supposed to be any dumb questions. I hope this is not one. I HAVE read the owners manual. Is it OK to turn key about half way between OFF and LOCK to keep key from popping out like when I am getting gas or somewhere I don't want to lock the fork? I don't want to be drawing any current from battery and I also don't want to be picking my key up from off the ground. I have a 2009 Super Glide. Is this what maybe you people do in this situation?
Thanks.
Thanks.
If you are paying at the pump and don't want to take the key out then leave it on. The battery won't go dead that quickly. I have accidently left mine on for 20 minutes before and it started right up with no problem.
How long does it take to fill the tank, 2 minutes?
Turn off the switch on the bars to shut off the fuel pump. All of the lights combined doesn't draw that much power.
I wouldn't put the key in between.
My .02. I'm sure there are those who would be appalled to suggest this.

I've always wondered if the key would still work for locking/unlocking the bike if the internal pin was ground off. Does anyone know if this internal pin has to be there? I think it's only there to keep the key from falling out, in which case a modified key would allow you to lock/unlock the bike and then place the key in your pocket. No worries about it dropping, and no chance of it scratching up the frame. Thoughts?

Perfectly safe to leave the key 1/2 turned off. I do that all the time when I have to stop for a draw bridge. I almost dropped the key into the Puget Sound one day while wearing thick gloves. The draw bridge had metal grating on it. I turned off the engine to wait for the bridge and my keychain saved my a$$ from having to get a tow truck.
I always turn it to the 1/2 way point now, especially while filling up or waiting at a bridge.
While I tend to agree with Romark, I prefer to kill all electrical current while refueling. Leaving the ignition on while handling gasoline seems to be an unnecessary risk, IMHO. But that's just my opinion.

Taken aback is less severe than appalled.
If I were appalled I doubt I'd be in any condition to reply to your post.

I’m glad to see somebody post about the key popping out…..that irritates me. I don’t mind pulling it at a gas station, but there are times that I wish I could stick it in there and it would stay.
I have a helluva time with this key on my new Dyna. It seems to always be hard to turn. Maybe I need some graphite in there or something.
