hey guys, new to this site.. but i joined specifically for this reason.. I've owned both carbed pre-2k evo (fatboy) and now own a twin cam 96 w/efi (08 crossbones) and i can't stand efi!! i joined this site to learn about converting it back to a carb.. i've only had my bike for about 8 months and only have about 4k miles on it and im having stalling issues where the efi just cuts off in the middle of a take off, not to mention the crappy sound and performance w/out baffles or aftermarket pipes.. ya my old carbed bike needed some love when it was cold outside but it forced me to learn about carbs and to take care of and learn my bike.. instead of dumping it off at the dealer or paying 300$ for a power commander or fuel pack..
I have a carb on my dirtbike and its a pain in the ***, much more tinkering than I would like. My roomy has a carb on his Night Train and he has to mess with it every time we go ride. The sound is different, but I would take my bigger cubes sound over his lower RPM lope any day of the week. I want my Harley to be simple, too many other complex things in my life. Sit on it, start it, disappear
I have never lived north of Jacksonville Fla.We only have summer and feb.
I love the potato potato sound of a carb, but most of all I life a reserve and no fuel pump.I run out of gas I know I have a gallon and feel better that a light telling me I need gas
i hear ya capnez.. i've been looking into the carb conversion on my 08 crossbones and i think in the long run it's going to save me hella cash!! i know efi is a superior fuel management system but for a guy like me.. getting nickeled and dimed to death isn't my cup o' tea as far as efi goes..
Had a Sportster with carb. My Super Glide has FI. So far love the FI. I no longer have to carry around a spare sets of spark plugs like I did on my Sporty. On cold winter mornings if I let it warm up too much, it would foul the plugs pretty good.
Now, start up the Glide and go!
With the mods on my '00 FXDL I switched from the stock carb to the S&S G. Very little warm up time. A few seconds in the warm and hot weather and maybe a minute when it gets cold (30-45 degrees) out. It is reliable and holds adjustments perfectly. For this bike it's the way to go.
Now when I ride out on the west coast, all the HD's I rent have FI. Its been great at handling big swings in elevation. Also proven very reliable for starting the bike in all kinds of temperature conditions (both air as well as engine).
Bottom line is I'm glad the bike I own has a carb and happy the bikes I rent are fuelies.
does a crossbones cost? and your worried about being nickled and dimed to death????............. Are you serious?????
msrp is about 17k... new.. ttl was about 19 out the door w/ cash.. and yes.. im worried about being nickel and dimned to death after paying that.. and that's fairly cheap for the softail family..
