Nothing LOOKS like a Springer, I'll agree - they LOOK badass. As far as handling and performance go, well - nothing badass about em. There are some great handling aftermarket forks - Somebody put some inverted forks on a Fat Bob. I'd look for something performance oriented as well as easier to change the fork oil.
If I stay with conventional forks then I may see about just getting some replacement ohlins front tubes if I can. The other option is an internal cartridge system for the stock tubes. I'm gonna put a few hundred miles on these shocks first and try to decide what's next.
Whatever you paid Howard for the shocks is between you and Howard all I can say is I also bought Ohlins from Howard however the black springs were not avail for my weight, I have not gotten one negative comment on them but lots of positive comments. They are pricy but you get what you pay for. I had Howard make up a set of front forks for my Dyna with cartridges that were taylored to my weight and let me tell you that the difference was phenominal and I have not yet gotten my suspension totally dialed in. I also at the same time went with v-rod lower sliders and Brembo brakes and that is
another pricy mod but well worth the price and effort. Between springer and cartridge system IMHO there isw no comparison.
I received my Ohlins shocks today for my Fatbob and just finished putting them on. The install took about an hour and a half(including adjusting the pre-load and sag settings for it). I ordered them from Howard at MotorcycleMetal.com and he really took the time to help me make sure I was getting what I needed. I received them in just under a week and they were built with my weight/riding style in mind. The worst part is that it started raining about 15 minutes before I had finished installing them. I'm gonna try to get out tonight for a little while if it will dry up enough. Now I just have to figure out what I'm gonna do for the front.

I have Ohlins similar to those pictures on this thread. Mine have adjustable height/length, compression and rebound. and are 13.2 " base length. They retail for $1450 a set (I believe). I purchased mine on sale from a different vendor (I had used them before) for $960 plus shipping (no sales tax). I think Howard has competetive pricing. (I don't believe the price I paid would still be available from the vendor I used).
they look mean, distinctive , and execute performance well worth the price. I think mine are probably the best piece of equipment on my bike.
For those concerned about the exact price, there is an entire internet search engine (many actually) whereby you can find list prices for Ohlins. Try using them. Then, when you have decided you want a quality shock, see Howard and have him quote you his prices to set you up on the shock of choice. Don't worry, google don't bite.
I have been told that the forks/dual Brembo brakes, etc from a Street Rod (R model of the V Rod family) is a bolt on. Not sure of this, but if it were, the R has cartridge forks already. If you could find something on E Bay it might be a way to consider.....

I'm used to people asking/informing each other about price. I'm not shopping around, but if the price comes out reasonable enough, it may be an impulse buy on my end.

I really don't understand all the song and dance about price, it's pretty easy to find out, Ohlins 36E run around 550.00+ the ones in this link 36P run around 600+, 36PR(with rebound adjust) run around 750.00. Top of the line 36PRCLB will run anywhere from 1200-1600.00 depending on who you buy from. (this will have length adjustment, rebound and compression adjustment, remote reservoir) any price under 1200.00 will be a good deal for these. All of Ohlins shocks are NOT 1K +, they have several shocks under 1K. Other shocks in the 500-700.00 range would be works and YSS. Peace.
