I was cleaning out the garage this weekend to make room for two bikes. I noticed the rear tire looked low on the Dyna. Rolled it around and there it was a big screw in tire. The tire only has 2k on it. Guess I will be buying a new tire. I hate the stock Dunnies that I have always gotten on any new bike, just need to decide to go ahead and change them both to Metzlers or Avons, or just stick with another Dunnie for now.
I stuck with Dunlop when I replaced my rear. I had a good deal on an 880 Metzler, but the compound is softer and won't last as long. Good tire, just not for me. I don't know anythijg about ther Avon.
Mounted a D407 on the rear of my Dyna Saturday. So far the ~100 miles I've put on since then have felt pretty good. D407 is dual compound tire... harder in the middle, softer on the outside. I ran through my K591 in 7K miles.... didn't want that again.
Can't the tire be plugged?? A buddy of mine uses a $600 rear tire on his Gixxer...he got a nail in it and replaced the tire. He told me that for normal riding on a cheaper tire, he wouldn't have a problem getting it plugged but for his style of riding, he wouldn't take a chance on it.

I am sure this is a good tire, but it is not a Multi Tread or "dual" compound. I posted an e-mail I got last week from Dunlop on your thread you posted on the D407, I guess you missed it. I originally posted a thread on the D407 back on 9/08 on this same tire and I e-mailed again to make sure last week. Here is the reply.
Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your Dunlop motorcycle
tire questions. The Dunlop D407, in the size 170/60R17, is not a
multi-tread (MT) compound tire. Also, do not mix bias ply and radial tires
on the same motorcycle unless it is with the approval of the motorcycle or
tire manufacturer.

Dunlop also told me in the 9/08 message that they have no plans on to make a MT tread for our bikes in a 160 or 180. I don't know why, they could sell a lot of tires.
I replaced my O.E. K591 @ approximately 11K with another one and I need to replace it again with less than 7K on it and I did not change my riding style. In my experience no replacement tire lasts as long as the O.E tire, even of the same exact tire.

Nah, it's a tube tire, even if it was a tubeless tire, I would not be comfortable riding on a plug.

In my experience, the Metzler are the better choice over a Dunlop. Better traction for one thing. Also - see if you can get Dyna Beads for balancing out the wheel instead of putting those unsightly wheel weights on them. They're cheap & you can even do it yourself pretty quickly/easily. They perform better than wheel weights too.
