Angry Turn Signal Wire Cut? !

ok.. so this sucks:

I got an 07 Dyna Street Bob.

my wife has been getting checks back from my mc insurance for the last three months & didn't even tell me. she thought it was "no big deal".. lol

So basically, I have no insurance - I called the company and have to take the bike in for inspection to start a new coverage plan... So I was going to do that and realized that my left rear turn signal does not work. Checked under the fender and it looks like the wire broke loose from the clip on the inner fender wall, and was frayed and cut on the tire.

So here's my plan:
1) buy 16 gauge wire (is this the right gauge), diaelectric grease, solder iron, solder.
2) take existing wires (purple/black) out of the clip under the tail light, and plug in new wires - add some dialectric grease
3) lead the wires under the fender, (in the retainer clips) and out to the turn signal.
4) cut the existing turn signal wires coming out of the turn signal.
5) solder the new wires from the tail light clilp to the existing turn signal wires coming from the turn signal.
6) cover the solder in electric tape.
7) put all back together.

Am I missing anything? aside from having a stern talk with my wife?

Thanks in advance..

J.

Instead of using electrical tape at your solder joint I would use heat shrink tubing.

I would take the tail lamp lens off, unclip the Lt turn signal wire, unbolt the Lt turn signal and pull the wires out to make the repair.
I would use the connectors that you crimp and then heat to seal and solder the repairs and stagger the repair, makes or a much easier and water tight repair. You may not need to add wire depending on the condition of the stock wires.
Re-install.
I would route the wires up through the strut bracket, then get in under the fender and clean an area on each side really well, cut a strip of quality 3M sticky backed tape and secure the wires up against the fender. This works very well if you clean it properly and use a quality tape. This is a good example of why to use the brackets for the wide tire kit as they route the wires tight against the fender and farther back. You can see the tape and the bracket in the pic.

Man i hear ya, went through the same type of thing doing the turn signal relocation to put detachable sideplates on. CUT WIRES was the first step i read in the instructions. 6 hrs later it was done. Dealer told me i could do it myself in an hr. anyways thats another story. heat shrink connectors work really good but be care full with those wires. Have someone hold the connector while you crimp it. or the wire will slip out when you go back to crimp it again. unless you own the harley davidson crimper, oh and they make the harley davidson heat gun with harley wire shrink attachment. No joke!

Heat shrinking your wires is not a big deal... and if you pull the terminals out of the connector, you don't need to "recrimp" anything. Just get good quality heatshrink... and if you can find it, get the kind that is lined with adhesive... forms a really good environmental barrier. Make a good quality solder joint too...

not a bad job i have had mine cut and soldered and heat shrinked about 4 times now from changing things around back there.

bigger job is talking to the wife. I got burnt like that once even had a paid cashed check and no accidents and no one ever called us and they cancelled our car and bike and boat insurance screwed up thing was we drove not knowing it for about 4months and then boy did i get screwed cause all the insurance companies i went to made me pay as a first time policy holder for the first year. I was so pissed i went off on my insurance guy and dumped everything from him house everything and got a deal with another place in my town and been with them since.

Another simpler option is just to buy that section of the wiring harness and replace it, <$20 at the dealer with the rubber channel included that runs under the rear fender - but they will probably have to order it.

So you were paying for insurance. The company was sending the checks back and your wife didn't mention it? So you didn't have insurance and she didn't tell you? Wow. I'd cut her off for a while till she learns her lesson. You could have gotten a big nasty ticket and possible jail time...but it was no big deal (to her).

The very first thing you should do is disconnect the negative terminal at the battery if you get a short say goodbye to your TSSM/TSM and they aint cheap and definetly solder your connections, I've been there
