Default Isolated leak, now what?

I think I have found the origin of my leak, the transmission vent. I have done a search in the forums and find it referenced but I can only find the fix to being overfilled. When warm and sitting level, it reads on the bottom line to read add. What else could be the cause of pushing out fluid? It is definitely coming out of the vent and running down the back of the primary. Of course I find this after I have ordered 150 dollars of gasket sets from Cometic's....

The MOCO has different ways of checking trans. oil levels for different years and different models. If you are checking the level for a 93 you should find a service manual for that bike. The 99-05 Dyna's are checked with the bike upright and level, the dipstick sitting in the plug hole not screwed in. Preferably at operating temp.

My manual reads level at operating temp with stick all the way in. With the level at the bottom line reading add, it is still pushing fluid out the vent hose. I can see a clear trail where it comes out and down the rear of the primary. Anyone ever have this before?

Your 1993 is checked upright and not on the sidestand. The stick is suppose to be all way in as well. It should be warm, but I have noticed that it really does not make any difference. If the transmission is a little overfilled....it won't hurt at all.

I know, it is stupid.....You check the oil on the sidestand and transmission upright. It would have been much easier and made more sense to check both fluids on sidestand.

I guess a person could make sure the transmission fluid is full by checking the bike upright. Then, place the bike on the sidestand and check the fluid again. Wherever the fluid is on the stick, make a mark/knotch there. That way, you can check both while the bike is on the sidestand.

If it isn't overfilled, as you have stated, my only solution would be perhaps the oil is becoming aeriated and is foaming, causing the expansion, with expansion being the only thing that will cause this. What type of oil are you using in the trans? I use Mobil 1 Synthetic transmission 75-90 in mine and have not experienced this at all. Perhaps if you are using "engine" oil in trans, like MOCO says it's OK to do, try the transmission oil and see if it helps. I have seen engine oils have a tendancy to "foam" in a gear box assembly at times, depending on the oil.

Good luck

Thanks for all the input. I think it may have been slightly overfilled after having some work done and that's why it pushed out some fluid. It has started to slow a little. I met a guy who is gonna look it over with me.

I'm pretty lucky between the Saab's and now the Harley as people who own them love to talk about them and help you out with them. Great communities..............
