I am going to change the oil tommorow.......The HD Manual, oil, filter and filter tool all cost me $115. But the actual oil filter and new gaskets and O-rings were like $40 so that should be all it costs me next time.
The valves have automotive type hydraulic lifters and do not require routine adjustments. Some where down the road (a long road) you may have to replace the lifters then adjustment would be neccessary. I had over 52K on my 96 1200 XL when I traded it in on my St Bob and had no lifter or valve problems. Just the usual valve train noise.
My dealer told me to keep records and receipts when I do any maintenance work to keep up the warranty.
Well fellas here is the verdict. The project was simple. The most complicated part was adjusting the clutch and that was cake. I am extremely glad I did the maintenance myself. I will be doing the 5k myself too, I think at 10k I will bring in to the shop and have them do a complete go through on the bike. Not the dealer but a local Harley shop. I had to run to Pepboys a couple of times for some funky sized star head sockets but in the end the project only took me a couple of hours. If you have any mechanical abilities at all you can definately save yourself some $$$$$
Buy the Service manual from Zanotti's or JP it cost from 48 to 57 bucks but tells you how to do everything on your bike.
It lists all your fluid levels intervals and torque specs.
Save all your receipts from oil filters etc. Mark down mileage on sheet and save with the receipts.
Good Luck,
JT
hey man would you be able to tell me who makes the manual and the part # please thanks
