I know the K&N can be used as an open air, does anybody know if the H-D SE can be used open as well? Does an open-air need to have oil?
you can use it, but, it will get dirty really quick... I clean mine every 1000-1500 miles. That is why if you go open air I highly recommend the K&N. Even if you don't, The last a lifetime of the K&N is worth it's weight in gold.
Here's a thought. Just use a clean stock filter. If your filter can pass 280 cfm or 320 cfm is irrelevant if your bike only uses 40 cfm. Unless you are drag-racing and have your rev-limiter raised significantly (and bump it often), enlarged your throttle body, and modified your cam timing, there is no benefit what-so-ever to anything other than a stock filter. Also, you will admit larger particulate into your engine...not worth it.
Lastly, be aware that over-oiling your filter is worse than not oiling it at all. Your air-flow-meter will not take kindly to excess oil and you will never understand why your bike won't idle properly. With a clean-stock filter, there's no mapping or performance issues of any kind.

Just sayin'.
problem is he'll be replacing his SE air filter ever 2K or so if he runs it open... cost's add up... Why not get a filter you buy once and have forever. He already has a stage 1 filter system so the idea of stock is mute.

The SE filter element is washable like the K&N, you just don't have to oil the thing.
I run the SE washable/non-oil open air for about a year now and have been happy. I have washed it one time with around 6K on it. Been in some moderately heavy rain for fairly short periods of time, like 15 min or so and have not had any problems. I was originally going to use a K and N but thought the SE looked better on my bike than the yellow KN. just my 2 cents- i dont think you will have a problem either way you go.
I have had a coupla reputable mech. say to wash the S.E. filter but don't oil it.Any one had issues with this?
I've washed mine a couple of times and it works fine.Coincidentally I used K&Ns cleaner to wash it . It is after 4 years starting to rust so I'll be switching it out someday with a K&N just so the oil will keep it from rusting.
I tried washing mine... did not work out... get the K&N... heck I'll sell you a brand new round one I have for 20 Bucks if you want it. Probably used for less than 100 miles. Let me know.
Rounder,
I'll take you up on the round K&N filter if he doesn't. Mine is too wide, and makes my knee ache when I'm on my highway pegs. Let me know.
