o.k. I am getting geared up to install forward controls and will tear into my primary. My question is what covers the hole in the inner primary on the backside? Reviewed many posts and instructions and nothing seems to answer question what plugs the whole on the innner primary after removing the mid shifter shaft.
There is a gasket in the kit for the mid position shaft that rests between the primary chaincase housing and the primary cover. Because of this, there is no need for a gasket for the housing.
Hole remains open on the back side and is gasket-ed on the inside between covers. Your kit should come with a little chrome cap to plug the hole in the otter cover (this cap is cosmetic only).
Like others have said, there's a donut shaped gasket between the two halves. (part no. 63869-06) My kit did not come with one, (49080-06a) so I reused the original. That was a mistake, started leaking after a few months, so I had to replace it.
So, if kit didn't come with one, do yourself a favor and get one before you start. Cost about a dollar.
keep reading you don't have to take the primary apart. most are cutting the shaft off and pulling it out.
+1
Even if you don't do the "cut and pull", leaving it in won't be a big deal. And it saves a TON of time too. I could have had my forwards on in 35 mins....but I milked it a bit to spend more time with my dad.
Thanks for the replies. I'll check for the gasket.
As far as tearing into the primary, I have an 06 and want to check the screws on the stator and tack weld those suckers.
I'm also going to change the IPB with a baker bearing.
One other question, what adhesive did folks use for the decorative cap?
