I had lots of issues with my bars, but that's mainly because I had bars with welded parts that were at a 90 degree angle. That would rub through the wirese and short out the fuses. So my advice is 1) Don't get bars that have been welded together then smoothed out, most apes are just bent so that makes life easier 2) ALWAYS run shielding through the bars then feed the wires (you can get em at radio shack, looks like a chinese finger trap) 3) figure out a system to mark the wires and put the extenders on by soldering before you run them

1) +1

2) +1

3) You don't need to 'figure' out how to mark the wires to extend. If you get the Novello extension kit, the wires are the same at the stock wires. Therefore, black goes on black, red on red, etc. OR cut, splice, solder, heatshrink. Also, when it comes to disassembling the molex connectors, the wires are the same color on both sides of the connector...again no need to 'figure' anything out. Just match the colors up.

If your nervous about disconnecting the wire s from the molex connectors wrap masking tape around connector and mark the color of the wire before disconnecting.

Just installed 12" Z-bars a few months ago, definitely easier to run the chinese finger puzzle through the bars first(with a pull string through it) then pull the wires through.
Also get one of those small jeweler type screwdriver kits to help pull the wires out of the connectors.

Oh yeah the last and most important thing is to make sure you have 12 pack ready to go.

here's a question...... if you are replacing your bars with similar height ones (slightly taller) that dont require new cables of extending the wiring (and you have external wiring a la pre-09 SB) - will the controls just "slide off" the old bars as a unit so you can just slide em back on the new ones? dont know if that makes sense or not but I was wondering if you could do it without actually having to dissasemble anything.........
