Default Cams

Ok, I'm going to use this thread to track my progress.

I'm mid process of collecting the necessary parts for a cheapo cam swap.

I did get all necessary gaskets, o-rings, etc the other day.

I found the +4* advance gear brand spankin new for $39.99 +shipping. Wood sells his for $125. Andrews had it for $51. Same darn gear.

So far:

Wood TW6 chain drive cams: $200 used - HDF.
Gaskets, bearings, o-rings: $50 - MoCo
+4* advance: $39.99 - directharleyparts.com
Timing gear spacers (6): $32.00 - MoCo

timing gear spacer p/n:
25729-06>>0.100"
25731-06>>0.110"
25734-06>>0.120"
25736-06>>0.130"
25737-06>>0.140"
25738-06>>0.150"

I went to H-D in Florence, SC today to get the timing gear spacers. I don't know who said they were $1.50 ea....but holy crap. They charged me $5.00ea. Total bill was $32 and change after tax. I will return what I don't use.

I will reuse my stock pushrods until such a time I can afford to get the heads done. I'm looking forward to a bump in power.

I suspect sometime next week (may 12-15) to get this done. I'm only waiting on the delivery of the advance gear at this point. I almost want to just swap that out with stock timing gear to see what happens. I suspect a little boost in performance. Maybe 2%-5%?

I did forget to buy a new oil filter and oil. Oh well, I'll hit my local indy. He can't screw up an oil filter.

So, until next installment...

Did ya get exhaust gaskets? About the pushrods, I'm leaving the stock ones. They're 1 piece opposed to 4 and their lighter than adjustables. It's an easy swap. Wait until you're out of gas to do it. You may want to cut down an allen wrench for the rear rocker cover bolts. Holler if you need anything.

No, I forgot exhaust gaskets too. lol I've used one of those cheap hand pumps to empty the tank before. Just pull the center console, fuel pump, etc and I was able to get just about all the gas out.

Thanks, Don.

Didn't see assembly lube on your list, maybe you already have some? Put plenty of lube on the new cams and gears. Just put in Headquarters HQ-500 cams in my Lowrider, love the torque! Good Luck

I left my tank on when I did my cams, I unbolted the mounts then raised it up a little.

I would consider thinner head gaskets. You are only a few bolts away at that point!

.030 cometic gaskets for the heads. supposed to be a good thing for the woods cams(increases compression). Have fun. I just put some andrews gear drives in my bike. worth it. I went the easy route and did S&S adjustable pushrod kit. Are you changing the lifters? Not necessary probably, but, still a good idea.

Where I have my workshop/storage space is in a very small strip mall whose neighbor is an auto-mechanic. I'm going to swipe some from him. I have a pretty good repore with him and he's given me open reign to his shop. He's even offered to give me a key to the shop so I can go down there afterhours. I turned that offer down.

I appreciate the info, Paul. Thanks.

Red/Rounder,

I was going to do the gaskets. Both dealers I went to had no clue what I was asking of them. After I asked the first parts guy for a .030 head gasket, all he said was "why?". I knew to stop right there. I'll check the catalogs.

Thinking about it, that means removing the TB to pull each head. Now I'm getting into an area that if I pull the head, I'd rather send it out for a proper port job and machining to bump compression. Remember, I'm doing this on a very tight budget and am unemployed to boot.

I wanted to do adj. rods it's just not in the budget right now. I know it would be something I'll end up doing once cash starts flowing in because then I'll be able to do the heads to compliment the cams....and if I tear it down that far chances of a 103" or bigger is possible. I'm eying the S&S 106 and am paying attention to others on here currently doing it. In due time. I know the TW6 would work very well in a 103. Not sure how they would work in the 106".

I'm just so tired of looking at these cams on my nightstand every night when I fall asleep. lol

When I pulled my heads for the .030 HG I couldn't just put them back on, I sent them to Bean for a $300. port job. Between porting, HG and 1.725 rockers my bike came to life, I did the Supermeg and now it's a whole new ride.

I'd love to do that Paul...but when your unemployment check less than what that $300 port job costs, it tends to put things into a "I don't need this right now" category.

I wish I had the cash to do a full blown build. I never usually do things cheap. I don't mind paying for quality but just not in my checking account right now.

Unless of course you're willing to flip the bill with Beans... I'd be happy to ship them off.
