oh yeah, this could be something simple like one or both plugs are incorrectly gapped. too little gap and the spark plugs not properly torqued can cause detonation. Check em, if they are at .040, they should be ok, however in my service manual the range of gap is .038-.043(05) so maybe the bike will run better if you increase it to .042 and be sure to have them correctly torqued in the heads.

You spend the bucks to buy brand new bikes so you don't have to put up with crap like this.

Quit writing in the forum and trying to figure out what the problem is and take it straight back to the dealer and throw a sxxx fit and tell him to get it fixed. If that doesn't solve the problem go straight back to HD and raise all kinds of hell.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Most of you have made valid points and offered very sound advice. I cant afford the downtime on the bike right now so the dealership has to wait.

I didnt read the whole thread but I will post anyway.

My bike hard a very loud ping in the top end under hard acceleration. I had some slip-ons on it and thats all, not real sure if it did it before the slip-ons since they were on the bike pretty quick.

After I installed my PCV and breather it went away.

I did alot of searching on this at the time as well and came to the conclusion if was caused from a lean condition that the PCV solved.

I agree with wl, that new you should not have to spend money to fix an obvious problem, go to the dealer until they find and fix the issue.

Take it to the dealer to document the problem you think you are experiencing and then ride the **** out of it. Other than adding some ieds, which did make the bike run cooler but nothing for the "ping", I rode the **** out of mine and I have since determined it is not detonation. 22K later I m still running the **** out of and it is still together in one piece bone stock and running great. I was thinking of getting the down load because I heard it moves the rev limit up a few hundred rpms.

Go to the dealer and try to find a solution. If the dealer barks at you, then you have to look in a different direction. Give them a chance, this may be common enough that they know what to try first.

What is this PING??? Is it a sound the bike is making. Iam new to owning bikes so if there is a ping that I need to listen for, then I hope I will be able to reconize the sound when it happens....All the sounds I hear, seem to be normal, but i mostly just hear my pipes...

I know where you're coming from and I too have chased this situation for 2 years now. The stealer will do nothing and likely say it isn't pinging. Some stealers will say it's "normal"! I've gone the full gamut, tried the X-ides, don't waste your $$! I have a TTS, dialed in on the dyno by guys who specialize in HD tunes using the TTS and have been involved with NHRA for over 30 years. I have discussed this issue with other dealers in the area where Yuill Bro's do their work and have not one negative word to say about their tuning ability. To please me, they have done to it what I wanted, changed programing, added fuel, retard timing. The present tune I now have, is likely the best one yet! That said, I need to ask what your are really hearing?? Is it an actual ping or a ticking sound from the left side of the motor?? Mine has done this from day one, even prior to the mods I've done. A ping is a ping, that rattling sound like metal shavings in a coke can. The "ticking" sound is what I get under the same conditions you speak of. I can ride it like a two stroke, roll it on even harder and get ticking from the engine. So, my riding habits or style aren't the issue! I've had Yuill Bro's ride the bike, friends ride the bike, everyone comes to the same conclusion, it's not pinging, it's likely valve train and other gear noise we hear. I've equated the ticking I hear, as detonation, when in reality or probability, it's not that and likely gear/valve-train noise. Why I only hear it when I roll on the go above 3-3200R's is beyond me, likely because of the load being put on the engine under this condition. Hope this helps and I'd like to know if it's ticking noise you are hearing.
