I was riding my bike back from work last week and I noticed that when I would down shift, the lever did not automatically return to downshift through the gears. I needed to slightly lift the lever up for it to click and reset so I could downshift another gear. I made sure the engine had time to warm up, and it was plenty warm here in South Carolina. It never happened until last week. I've taken it out since and it still occurs but now seems more intermittant than constant. I guess it would help to know that I have an '08 stock superglide and I don't even have 10k miles on it yet (I know, that's bad) but is rides real nice otherwise. I did 1k mile and 5k maintenance already.
I would slack the cable, and remove the handle and clean the pivot pin and the surrounding area. Then a little lube and put it back together. Also throw a few drops of lube down the cable itself. I bet youve got debris in the pivot pin area.

Reading this makes me think you're talking about the foot SHIFT Lever and not about the clutch hand lever.
you may need to do a regular clutch adjustment. You will have to loosen up the clutch cable all the way, take the primary cover off, loosen the nut on the clutch plate then back out the screw until it is loose, then tighten it back until you begin to get resistance. turn it back a half turn then re-tighten the nut. you can then adjust the clutch cable until there is about an 1/8 inch of play in the clutch lever. See if that works.
Bigmik, why would the OP need to remove the entire primary cover? I'm fairly certain you just need to remove the derby cover for a complete clutch adjustment.
