I hear the mention of going to a different pulley quite a bit. How much does it change the low end shift points, (into third by the other side of the intersection haha?), of the bike and fuel mileage? Does it sound like it's going to fly apart at 70mph, does it make 6th gear more "useable"? How much in labor costs to install and where do you get one? I have a 2008 Wide Glide by the way.
Thanks in advance.
I can get 3rd by the time I cross a 4 lane. 70 is a breeze in 6th. The stock 32/66 gearing is way too tall, the 30T pulley is one of the best mods in my view, I'm going lower when I change tires.
It depends on how mechanically inclined you are. If you're not much of a wrench forget it. It's a challenge and it requires a couple of special tools. I did it for around $200.00 total. I imagine if you were to have a dealer do it $400-$600
I always feel that I want to shift up one more time on the freeway ('03 FXDL), so I was considering getting a 6-speed transmission upgrade - when someone I know said to change pulleys instead (and I guess that means sprockets/gears).
If I understand this thread, it seems like 6-speed riders want to gear down ... what about gearing up a 5-speed? Anyone have experience with this? What combination front/rear changes give more top end result, without difficulty starting out in 1st gear? What RPM do you run at 70mph? (currently about 3300 for me.) Are the speedo/tach affected?
It will launch much better, and I run through the first few gears a little quicker. Riding back roads I might shift a little more than before. I find 6th gear is more practical to me but I rarely run over 90 mph. Probably will get less fuel economy, but you gotta expect that to happen. I did the change for the positives, which are significant. As for the negatives, I could care less, can't have your cake and eat it too.

Yep; I went up to a 33 tooth front and it made quite a bit of difference on my 02 wideglide. I can cruise nicely at 80 and still get out of the hole pretty good. I no longer feel like I have to catch another gear a 55. I have the 95" kit and cams and it will step out quite nicely in 5th at 50 but still gets 43 mpg and 49 if I'm real nice to it (which I'm usually not). With the 32 I was through the gears in short order and felt like I was screaming it at 80. Just my .02

On my 09' Dyna, the original 32/66 sprockets produced a 6th gear cruise of 80mph at 2950-3000 RPM.
With my current setup of 30/66, the bike now cruises 74mph at 3000 RPM.
Haven't done an extended superslab cruise with it. Around town tho, the MPG is pretty close to the stock setup for my bike.... maybe 1 to 3 mpg less than stock gearing.
Sure enough... forgot to mention I have a Dakota Digital electric speedo adjuster module on my machine. Super easy to adjust the speedo, (even on the move) for sprocket size changes, to keep the indicated speed and ODO right on the money.
