Question building a custom fender - need electrical assistance..

Hey all, I am building a cool rear fender on my 07 Dyna SB... i'll include a pic to show you where I'm at in the build, and will do a build thread when I am done... It's turning out pretty well, but I have some questions about the wiring of the lights... all input is appreciated. Let's see if I can explain this clearly...

So, here's the idea: My new fender will have a brake light as well as a cool led light bar which has moving lights and such... also, I will have a side mounted license plate which will have both white and red led's installed to illuminate the license plate.

Here's what I want: I want the white lights on the license plate frame & the cool led light strip on the rear fender to be illuminated in 'running mode'. this is simple enough... But here's the rub, when I hit the brakes, I want the whites on the license plate to turn off, and the reds to illuminate, and I want the cool led light strip on the rear fender to turn off and the brake lights on the rear fender to illuminate.

I have attached a pic (sorry my photoshop is on the fritz, had to use paint), that shows my current knowledge.. namely just splicing the white license plate lights and the cool led strip into the 'running' wire of the rear lights circuit, and splicing the red license plate lights and the rear fender brake lights into the 'brake activated' wire of the rear lights circuit.

Questions: Is this the right set-up or are the white license plate lights and the cool led strip going to stay on when I hit the brakes?

Do I need some type of relay or something to ensure that the white lights and cool led strip turn off when brakes are applied, and turn back on when they are released?

If so, what do I need and how do I wire it? all help is appreciated as this is my first real custom job on my bike.

Lastly, I would like to install a switch on my battery cover that will turn off JUST the cool LED thingy in case I get **** from any police officers. How would this link into my project.

I would really appreciate direction from anyone more skilled than I because this fender is so bad *** that it demands cool lights

Thanks again HD Forum, you have always been helpful.

(see attached for any reference to what the hell I am talking about)

p.s. if you need any additional information to answer these questions.. please ask.

J.

What you are asking to do is possible, but I don't know where you would place the relays. It would be complicated, and probably a pain in the ***, since I would bet you would be replacing lamps or relays more than you might care to do. In addition to the relays to turn off the LED;s when you hit the brake, you need a load equalizer., if you have a PC III or some such device, you are going to need to create space somewhere for all of this.
Where are you located? Do you have electrical knowledge?

If you isolate the ground for your lic plate light, and feed that ground through the hot lead to the brake light, that should do it for you. Otherwise, you need to do a Wheatstone Bridge.

hmm.. not much electricity knowledge.. but in my (newb) mind seems easier.. turn the bike on, its in running mode... white license plate bulbs and cool led strip is on... hit brake... trips a relay... white lights go off, cool led strip goes off.. and brake lights and red license plate lights go on.. am I thinking too simply?

Well, do some research and find the 12v relays you would need to do the job. You need one that has Normally Closed contacts that when energized will open and kill the run circuit, or part of it.

yes, that was what I was hoping for from members.. the relays that would be what I need.. as someone who is not that great with this stuff, I was hoping for someone to show me exactly what I needed..

but, as you requested, I am doing research to try to find the answer

I would be happy to help design the circuit, but you have to do the research and legwork. You need to find one small enough to fit somewhere on your bike.

That fender reminds me of an old FLH. Love it.
